I have been working on a project and I would like to get some paint on it before winter comes around again. I don't have the tools to use a spray gun. I was watching the tv show trucks the other day and saw some type of roll on primer. Does anyone know the quality of this? Also are there any other methods to painting a vehicle without a spray gun? What types of paints should I use to prevent rust.
I'm just posting to welcome you. Some of the better suited people on here will probably be able to answer your question. I guess though, it might be good for you to post what kind of car, what kind of topcoat you are going to use, what quality of finished product you are expecting,etc. The more info you post the better chance you have of getting a good answer.

Well I do not know to much about paint, but basically I have been working on an 1st generation s10 v8 project for the last 2 years that is finally almost ready to be fired up for the first time. The cab and bed on this truck are solid, but the doors and fenders have actually rotted out from sitting in a storage shed over the winter. I would like to get something on the truck to prevent the cab and bed from rusting until I have a place to take the time to paint it the way I want to. It's so hard to find a first generation s10 around here with a solid cab and bed and I want it to stay that way.
I used rustoleum rusty metal primer and applied it with a brush,but I will be sanding 99 percent of it off,I just used this as a protector being that my project is out in the drive way with no shelter.Good thing it only rains a few minutes a year here!!!:LOL:
if you got a PPG jobber near you, they sell a 2K epoxy roll on primer. you could get an engine degreaser gun and some spray on primer like a 2k or even just a surfacer, mix a little reducer in it and the gun will spray out the paint like it would the degreaser.
You could get a real cheap gun from harbor freight , they are descent quality . Rent a small compressor .Tape everything off and shoot it. don't use a roller !If the body is not ready for paint use a filler primer . It will save you on sandpaper . good luck with your project . Bottom line it's your car , just trying to help.
You'll get to a point in your life like I did where it doesn't make any difference what other people think or you or your stuff. All you need is for it to make you happy.
Since moving to the north woods, I have none of the fancy tools I had in Phoenix. I sold all of them before I left. So, when I got here, I bought a '91 Ford beater p.u. for $1,000 that runs real good but just doesn't look that cool. I went down to the hardware store and had the lady order me 3 quarts of Rustoleum dark hunter green and painted the truck with a brush. It's the first time in my life I've painted a vehicle with a brush, but you know what, I've had some compliments on it. Who cares?

my uncle had a beater 1966 Ford Falcon Van that he put parts in from an early Ranchero he had, painted it ugly brown with a roller and drove it for a year or so, then sold it for double what he had in it, this was in the 70's.Quote:

use an epoxy for protection. any other primer will soak up moisture and not give much protection.
