i shot this truck at a local show and my wife pointed out, to my poor lack of concentration and failing eye sight. that every single flame lick in the paint job has a skull in it. the picture below was cropped from the center section of the rear door. this might be a question for (hot rod paint) to answer. is this a stencil air brush pattern, or what is the process to achieve this. i am sure it was very time consuming to do.
I am notbut heres my two bits : I do this free hand w/an air brush and some times cut a few stencils , and looking at just the second cropped pic a few of the lines are sharp and some look soft so it could be a few stencils to get the main shapes then freehand it all in so that they are not all the same that's what I'd say . You can do such things w/just stencils and either way it is very time consuming.Quote:

I guess you could lift the stencil or dust the edges and get close to the same affect ...
Doing that big of a job I'd cut a few main shapes, lay all the shadow color with a mid size gun w/stencils ,then come back with my shadow color in an air brush & rough it all in ,then do my darker color to get the depth ,and then come back through with the light color to bring it back out. yep! ... that's how I'd do it, and I'd get paid very well for it :D
The purple out line is impressive that whole job has lots of time in it but I can't say much for the green "I wouldn't use that pinstriper again, he don't know how to roll ."
pretty soon they'll have some kind of super thin stickers you can stick on and just cut to get the skulls and I bet WallyWorld will sell it. :rolleyes:

I agree with Treekiller, that they don't look just stenciled......and that striper needs to keep his day job, 'cause he ain't gonna make a living striping! The sad part is that he could have simply wiped the bad parts off when they were fresh, and redone those spots......but didn't.
There are sources for stencils....especially skulls....if you can't cut your own.
Custom work always takes a lot of time. Don't believe what you see on TV. A nice paintjob on a custom car or truck will take weeks of work.
Those stripes are not hand brushed, look real close, you can see where the tape is overlapped, and where the higher paint was not blended in, you can see the tape lines under the vinyl
I think you are right, judging by where the tape ends overlap. Looks like a case of "Do it yourself" gone bad! :-)

Hmm. guess I don't really see anything about the truck I like!!!! The paint certainly doesn't do a thing for me!!! I must be getting old or something...What's the deal with all the skulls anyway????
If you're into that kinda thing, here's my buddy's new paintjob on his 34 ford... all the objects in the flames are done with an airbrush, some stenciled and freehand filled in, others just totally freehand. Not someonthing I'm particulary into, but the work is outstanding and you can stand and study the details for hours. By the way, the pinstriping on this one is hand painted, by the same guy who did the airbrush work and flame layout.
skulls have been extremely popular in all parts of the custom auto hobby the last couple years. They might be an extension of the popularity of tattoo art. It's been mostly on bikes, but I've also done 'em on street rods, quads, helmets, and sand rails. I don't see it slowing down for a while.

Whatever happened to creativity and uniqueness??? I don't care if we're talking horsepower or body mods...you'll have to admit that going to a big show and looking at 500 interpretations of the Deuce, and 500 more of the 33-34 body gets a bit boring... Then they all scream when Foose or Trepanier build something totally off the wall and out of the norm that wins all the big rewards and gets all the Hot Rod Rag covers and centerfolds saying it's all because of their "big name". Well, IMO they didn't get the "big name" by ordering all their stuff out of the catalog and putting together another 1 of the 500 variations of the same theme????? Not all that many years ago copying someone else's ride, and maybe using different wheels and upholstery would get you laughed right off the street!!!!!
Has Politically Correct taken over the world of Hot Rodding, too???? Is it really so important to be socially acceptable that everyone should just never dare express their own ideas in the form of 4 wheeled art???? Maybe I'm just getting old and been around this stuff for too long. I miss the old days when a few guys would sit around and kick ideas back and forth til someone came up with an idea that wasn't out there on the streets yet....then you built it... Maybe it worked, maybe it didn't. But it was something unique when it was done. When you went to the show, the digs, or out cruizin' you didn't see 10 more just like it...

Don't have any idea where you get that I build HiTech cutting edge stuff, but my gallery is full of pics of some of my projects. Didn't mean to have you get all upset... I got bored with flame jobs last time they went out of style. Not your car, you didn't do the work, what's the big deal anyway???? I look at it this way...... it is your car or your body and you can do as you please. You will always have the traditional cars that look great and then you have the ones that are less main strem. Both attract attention but at the end of the day you only have to please one person.
Before street rods I was into Vettes big time. The Vette people can be traditionalist to the end. I am not. I made soome changes to a newer Vette and took a ton of slack for it. Now I see the same items and ideas on hundreds of them.
I decided to mold glass covers to cover the ugly engine and do a paint scheme that was something that was very dear to me and a strong passion.
People said why....I said why not?
I gave the patterns to a few and now I see tons of stuff.
Here are a few pics of those enigne covers ( I ended up doing 2 sets)
Just som eglass and paint but it changed the entire car.
So bottom line do what makes you happy

I have never met a Woman in whom I was unable to find an attractive feature. True, I may change her shoes, or buy her a different necklace, but that is just window dressing. I've know lots of gals that could never win "Best In Show", but wow, what a driver. For a few, changing from buckets to bench seating was a date requirement - but the sense of humor and twinkle in the eye was well worth it. There have even been some that were driven off by another guy! And though it was difficult at the time, I grew to understand he now had those maintenance nightmares.
Gentlemen, some look good from the front, and some from the rear, but they are all great, and our job is to appreciate.
