I have a '38 Dodge panel to paint, so it needs to be done apart. I am looking for a black with strong red overtones. I've used the old Cadillac color, but that is too brownish. I've also a 3-stage red candy over black pearl, but that's too hard to match or spot repair. I would like to find a nice 2-stage production color.
Ideas?
I assume you have already thought of House Of Colors and ruled them out? Lon
I know I can get a dramatic result with a 3-stage, like HOK, but if this thing gets damaged, (a full fendred street rod) I am the "poor sucker" who will have to fix it!
If I can't find a suitable 2-stage color, I will run over to the paint store and look at the X-otic offerings.
Xotic actually makes more products, and they were the chemists for HOK until it sold.
I tell my customers to drive around high end new car, truck, SUV lot's to see if they find a color that pleases them. Yes, it's time consuming but gives you a better idea of what a real vehicle will look like over just viewing a paint chip. When found just take the paint code into your favorite paint mixer. Some very nice colors on motorcycles also but it takes a bit of doing to get more than a quart from a dealer at a decent price. I have seen alot of black cherry colors/shades lately on high end SUV'z, Cad's, etc. I know YOU know all this, just posting for others that might want to start the hunt for a color. Lon
Good advise. I have offered that same solution to customers. You just can't tell from a colorchip what impact a subtle difference in shade will make until you see it outside on a car!
Hotrodpaint, (a bit of a highjack here, hope that's ok)I'm looking for a color close to one of these. I'd like to try and paint my truck myself! Any ideas to what the colors are and how hard they may be to paint? I figure to use a small panel to see if my techniques and supplies will look ok, before investing in large quantities!

Generally, darker colors and metallics will be harder, because the darker colors show light reflections more, and metallics offer more of a problem than solids for getting the color even.
If you plan on sanding and buffing, medium shades like this will look much better.
If you are not a great bodyman, avoid the dark colors, as they will magnify any flaws in the surface.
If you are a lousy bodyman...are unsure about your talent with a spraygun,... and don't have the patience to sand and buff....use light solid colors.
I will sand and buff, the darker red looked more solid and forgiving with body imperfections, the lighter one, has more of a depth to it, which I guessing would show even more flaws. Any ideas as to the name of those two reds, and thanks by the way!:D
Not close to any shades that I use regularly. There are probably many colors within that range. I would just go to some fleet charts from your favorite paint brand.
HotRod, I have a PPG code for what HD uses as their Black Cherry. I took a fender in and they scanned it and we came up with this. It was basically a perfect match. The Computer mix called it Dark Cherry. If you are interested, I can get the code off the label at the shop tomorrow and send it to you tomorrow evening...let me know. Donny
Donny, I would love to see it. I am trying to find something that gives me minimal problems matching parts that are painted seperately.....and of course the ability to deal with the occasional repair. Thanks. JayQuote:

Jay, that color is PPG mix code 4465. I used it in a DBU, base/clear... Get a pint mixed and do a sprayout and see if they like it, may be just what you're looking for!! Hope that helps :D . Donny

One of the nicest Black Cherry's I have seen is on the 2005 HD FLH Standard, it's called Black Cherry Pearl. Lon

I saw a fairly new cadillac sedan today, with a stock black cherry that looked nice and similar to what your looking for. Sorry, I don't know the exact car or year, but it looked pretty new!
