I have a 84 chevy truck that I want to get back to original looking as a new. I have run into this problem with other vehicles also. What paint to use to get back to the original black semi-gloss sheen? That will hold up just as good for a few years with heat and gases. Thanks

The paint store we use mixes up plain old 9700 black, then a flattener to bring it down to the correct sheen.... We use Ditler stuff, but I'm sure all the other companies have the same thing.

even though it can be a pita, I swear by that por-15. very durable. should definatly do the 3 part system, clean, prep and paint. it's pricey too but man does that crap stick. lol wear 2 sets of gloves, it will go through just 1. brush it on and it self levels. just my .02 here is a pic of the gloss level straight from the can on my prepped frame

You can buy paint from SEM called "Trim Black 39141". I worked in Chevrolet parts for a few years, and to me it looks exactly like the GM black.

Like the old GM parts black, it is watertight, requires no primer, and is a semigloss black. It is also for exterior use, so it won't fade.

I have used it for decades for bumper brackets, hinges, frames, inside fenders, or whatever else you want. This is lacquer base, but I think it is also available in enamel base. It is a real "cure-all", so I always keep it in stock.

Check with your local paint stores. One of them probably carries it.
