color sanding

color sanding ppg 2010 speed clear, started within 48 hrs. went down drivers side, did pass. side, roof, and noticed two things. first it appers orange peel dosn,t sand all the way out. I have reading glasses that make the surface look like waves when you get up on it. Second as the days go by it seems to me the clear is shrinking. it,s been a few weeks, and i am going over a second time with 2000 grit. I started with 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000. there's two gallons of clear spread pretty evenly. any of you ever had this problem

if you start with 1000 and a soft block you should have all peel out then step sand up to your finner paper .as for shrinking are you sure its not 1000 grit left overs you did not sand out with finner paper .as you open the clear some thinners well come out. if there is peel you just can not sand out then your base was not dead flat when you put your clear on it if put on very heavy your 1000 grit may not get it dead flat you may have to go to 800 if you have some clear on it .i never moved up to that fine of paper i stop at 1500or 2000 if you move up to fast with the finner paper you will have hills and valleys in the paint as your not cutting the paint flat your just polishng out the sanding marks

I think I'll try a little 800 my prep was flatter than what im seeing,are you buffing at 2000

i buff them at 1200 and use machine compound on them .if you go past 1500 you can go to a less of a grit cut in the compound .i used a wool wheel them moved up to a foam wheel i use 3m stuff for buffing i used finess it polish if past 1500 grit with wool wheel then foam wheel with the3M perfect it polish

Pat, you saved me! the 800 knocked out 80% of my problem, first time i tried, It blew me away cause i've sanded so much with 1000 grit,THANK YOU

Kinda scary w 800 but it works with a hard block then back to 1000 grit then compound and your finish buffing i use liquid 3m white stuff finess Just Like Pat said !!

you think thats scary i know guys that sand with 400 on solid color or clear then top coat clear over it

800 grit is scary, I take that rubber block and let it glide, very little pressure you can see it cutting the wrinkels,1000 on flat spots, 1500 with paint stick on curves, that looks flat, hav'nt buffed yet, but it looks ready

Well you'll have good mechcanical bond ! And it does give the wet look!!

My final wet sand is with 3000 grit Tri-zac on a short stroke DA using a lot of water and an intermediate pad between the DA pad and the Tri-Zac paper---- I only get this carried away on my own cars, customers don't usually want to pay the extra labor for 2 or 3 more trips around the car but on my own stuff I think the extra time and expense is really worth it!!!!
