I already had the engine built the previous summer. Originally I had no concept of how expensive this car would become and started out "cheap" so I bought a '76 Corvette 350 two-bolt for $300 (paid too much and got one of the worst 350s made). I took the block to "Joes Machine Shop" in Ashland VA where Joe is a circle track racer with a shop to build his own SBC400s and he showed me the 400s have only two-bolt mains and said not to worry. We put in a Crane "street cam" which is essentially the same as the 300 HP SBC cam with new rods and Joe reworked the heads with a three angle valve job, cheap hypereutectic flat top eyebrow pistons, Z28 valve springs, 0.030" overbore and 0.010"/0.010" cleanup of the crank. The heads were shaved down to 72 ccs and we estimate without decking the block that we got about 9:1 CR. The 883 heads were also treated to exhaust port smoothing and an Edelbrock Performer was added along with a stock HEI distributor and shorty headers. I estimate/hope this very mild engine gets about 270 HP. Actually John York of nearby York Sports Cars installed the engine and trans in the chassis when the rear gear was upgraded to a new 3.55 ring and pinion. The front end four bar setup is from Total Performance and the front wheels are 14" steelies from Wheel Vintique.
