Fibreglass, hmm, probably more fibreglass 41 Willys coupes than tin ones these days, still pretty cool to me. But how much difference is there in a store bought body and a store bought frame, or M2 suspension, or steering column. Where do you draw the line.
Personally I like old tin and building it myself but if I had the money, I would pay someone else. My welds look like crap 'cuz I can't see fer poop anymore.
DMW56,
That truck looks great. I have been thinking aout using an F1 cab for some time and you proved that it will work and look right. Excellent choice of bed too. It's the right width for the cab and lots of them out there. Love the inliner too. Nice loking grille shell. Most tractor grilles look like....well.....tractors. Yours looks good.
Tom
Allthough I dont like the term "ratrod" I know what you mean.:D
No paint on this bad boy.
454, auto, 9", and a bunch of other cool stuff.
A couple days away from welding up the frame.
Only used on Friday nights and full moons.
Warming the globe, one mile at a time.
A description of my rod project: standstill. I got a 36 chevy master sedan, and have gotten as far as stripping the fenders and beating out the worst of the dents. I gave up on it a while back, and tried to sell it. Turns out most people have more sense than I, and they passed on it. Well, as long as I still have it, there is hope for eventual progress.
If education is expensive, I must be the most educated (idiot) around!!* Cuz It's sure cost me a lot to learn!* Had 19 thousand in a rod that noone else would look at (I guess) and couldn't sell it, had to swap it for a Chevelle that was cloned and palmed off on me (the sucker) as a true SS car.* Then took a bad loss on the deal by selling it waayyyyyy lower than I had in it.* One would think that a single lesson like that would be sufficient, but I'm the guy P.T. Barnum wrote about, "there's a sucker born every day".* AMENPerley
Wrong again, gasoline breath. The quote is "There's a sucker born every minute".Quote:

Well, when I was in high school my dad brought home a '27 T shell. We also picked up a short box, a long box and a turtle deck. We've aquired a '32 grill shell and frame. Dad also has a '39 Lincoln Zephyr with a Nailhead in it, so I decided to put one of his spares (nailheads) in the '27. I am still looking for some orig fenders. One day I'll get her done. - Oh, I graduated 28 years ago. . . .!:D
Asked a question on a RR site and good friend sent me here to view some of his build pics.Joined up and started to look around and I saw this thread about rats . Will read it all later today .Her are a few pics of my rat-I call it Ratzilla . LFE

hey im not sure what i am starting on is a rat rod or not..but im dragging out a 35 ford pickup (or whats left of it) from the back of the yard..and want to build something cheap to cruise these old ozark gravel roads i live on with out worrying about the paint job..i havent really pinned down the engine & trans combo but it has to be a flathead..i have the old 8ba ford outta my 51 or the caddy flattie out of my 46 caddy im building...but either way its getting built with what i have already or can afford with my spare pennys..hope to have it started here in the next few weeks..and if a rat rod is a project ya chased the rats out of ..well this is one i guess..ha ha ha ha ha
yea i said it had to be a flattie..well i lied.:o.because i also have several nailheads laying around that if i can figure a way to get a standard behind one i could be persuaded to use one of them :)
Over the last year I have been collecting parts to build my grandsons and one granddaughter something a little different from the everyday ride when they reach driving age.
I started searching for an old cab of some sort, that part didnt matter what it looked like or what it was, just something to start with. I located a 1946 Dodge cab that had already been chop (butchard) and brought it home. After a closer inspection I seen it might be more than I wanted to tackle on my first build so I placed an add with a picture on another ratrod site trying to get rid of it.
About a week later a young man contacted me and ask if I would be willing to swap my Dodge cab for a 46 Ford cab and he would deliver it to my house.
After seeing a photo of his offer I agreed. The trade was made and we were both happy at this point.
It seemed the more I messed with this new cab the more rust I find until now I have decided to cut off the top in the near future and chop the winshield 4" and make a roadster cab out of it.
Purchased some 2x3x3/16 wall tubing and got the basic drop-frame laid out and tack together.
Got the body squared up and braced, the doors chop down and capped. Four inches have been takening out of the bottom of the cab and channeled 5".
Working on the floor before I take the top off so this piece of rust dont fall apart... So far its been replace metal and cut out more rust.
So the second search started for parts and pieces to build this crazy idea, Lord what was I thinking:rolleyes:
Located a 230CID straight six with a powerglide tranny and a Ford 9" rearend.
A 39 Ford straight axle with crossover steering and a couple of 15"x10"wide wheels for the rear and to 8" wheel for the front. Found a Offy 4bbl intake at a local boneyard and traded an Woodworth 2bbl carb to a guy for a new in the box 390cfm Holley to fit it.
Couple of 34 Dodge headlight puckets in which I have fitted with some Vega inner buckets and sealbeam headlight.
Bought a 15/gal keg and had a fellow tig in some bungs for the fittings along with a filler spout and now have a gas tank.
So the parts are coming together and now its time to start making something out of this pile of parts......I hope!!!!
This is about where I stand at the moment on this build. Will post some photos soon.
I need all the support I can get from you folks and thanks for allowing me to be a part of this forum.
God bless you all
A few photos of the cab and all its rusty glory....lol
and a couple after a few days of work on it.
A few more:
Looking good, great start. Like the pineapple, haven't seen one of those in many a moon.:3dSMILE:
Who cares what you call it just build it and drive it.:D
That's alot of the problem, where it exists. I don't know what the guy thinks a rat rod is when he calls both of mine rat's. The 66 chevy pickup is flat black until I get the metallic black on it this spring. Or the 48 that is engineered well, handles like a dream. Drives straight at 90 with hands off the wheel, is in gloss paint with clear coat, upholstery and not a drop of rust anywhere. It's a personal opinion, and most can't even tell you what a rat rod is. They just think they are looking at one. Junk is junk, whether its a 30 model A or a 94 Geo Metro. I get kinda testy when mine are referred to as rats, but all have meant it in a good way. There was a time, as they say back in the day, when being a hot rodder was like being a gang banger. Greaser was a derogatory term. When I first herd the term rat rod, I thought of the RAT Fink, I thought of those crazy rod driven by monster like characters drawn by the likes of Roth. That's not it, apparently. People like labels so if they don't know or don't understand maybe it's a rat. I try to react to the way it's said rather than what is said. Cause they don't know, and I sure don't know. What I might call a rat, you call art. What I think is traditional, someone else will call antiquated. Live and let live.
Although it looks a bit ratty ..... it is NOT your average rat build. I've purchased & am in the process of installing:
Chassis Works complete front (tube A-arms, R&P steering, coil overs, large Wilwoods) and rear (4 link, coil overs, FAB9 with detriot locker), extreme lowering, '72 Pantera magnesium wheels (7" & 8"), BBC, 5 speed ...... aluminum interior. Headers that'll exit in the lower rear side of each front fender.
Outside - paint & chrome DONE. Maybe some pins ......

i have recently bought my 47 ford four door sedan for $600. The had a seied up flathead in it and the transmmison had the gears stripped out and the cas cracked. I have been trying to get the enclosed driveline disconnected from the tranny but it has been giving me some trouble any advise? the crossmember is cousing me probles for the lover cup bolts are un reachable by a wratchet or rench.
i am trying to make the nicest car i can.
but since i am poor.
by default it will be called a rat rod.
but there will not be one speck of rust on this entire vehicle.
In my opinion, a "Rat Rod" would have the following features:
1. A gasoline, diesel, alcohol, or nitro-methane fueled internal combustion engine for power. [No electrical, vegetable or hydrogen fuels!]
2. can be any year, make, or model.
3. 75% [0r more] of all work performed on the vehicle is physically performed by the owner. [If you are going to pay someone to do the work, see Ford, GM or Chrysler and buy from them!]
4. No billet items,[includes WHEELS!], unless specifically made by the owner.
5. No chrome, unless you own a metal plating business and you do it yourself.
6. No Easter egg paint. Worn original or primer paint is preferred.
7. Rust and worn exteriors are acceptable as long as they are painted or primed over.
8. Interior optional, this includes bucket seats, milk crates, and original seats covered with a horse blanket.
9. Any attempt to copy designs by the late Boyd Coddington, Foose or other classical destroyers of iron, will disqualify owner of any consideration.
10. Engine modification, preferably engine replacement, is a plus. Carburetors [multiples, of course!] are preferred over fuel injection. Sticking a GM short block in your rod is a 20 point demerit! Putting a Nailhead, Caddy, Olds. Pontiac, GMC, Hemi, straight eight or six, with a manual tranny, is worth + 20 point bonus.
11. All Rat Rods are mechanically SAFE. They will have brakes that work, they will not ooze or leak fluids, nor will they smoke or act like a mosquito sprayer!
12. Chopping a top, Sectioning a body, "Z-ing a frame" are a plus, as long as the owner does it himself.
13. A Rat Rod that is different is worth special notation. Computer controls are not allowed. Same with any flashing neon bulbs, strips, or LED's
14. Self installed hydraulics to jack and twist the car around are a plus.
15. Any owner who laughs at another's handiwork should be thrown off the lot. We are Car - People, a special group who share a bond regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity. We do not discourage interest and questions from our youngsters. With out enthusiasm of youth our hobby will die. Reclaim classic iron rather than recycling. Carbon Credits Suck!!
.......Just my opinion!
I gues I never posted pictures of my finished truck. 1951 Ford F1 I sold it last March. 250 Chevy 6 with Offy 3X1 manifold with Rochesters, TH 350, Pertronix ignition, custom made headers, Chevy 10 bolt 3.73 Posi. Minneapolis Moline Grille, Allis Chalmers fuel tank. Super Bell 4" dropped I beam, Speedway Hairpins, Ford spindles, Chevy 11" dics brakes, Corvette master cylinder, Corvair reversed steering box, Aluminum radiator

I'd say no to #10, the old hot rodders when GM released the SBC immediatley started putting it in their roadsters. its perfectly acceptable to put in a vintage SBC into a rat. I know that a good majority of people go the SBC route since it's a cheap n easy way to go, which is kinda the point of a rat, low budget builds. A rat rod is just an unfinished looking hot rod with no expenses wasted on fancy paint, the owner should be piecing the rod together with any parts they can find that can be made to work together.
I would add that bonus points should be given for running an early flathead, and one thats been built with some extra giddy up gets even more praise!
i am not sure mine is a rat rod..i think it is.. it a older rig with a big engine,it was built in my shop with what i had laying around no pretty paint or fancy chrome or billit parts.. it is a bit rough around the edges but i have put 10,000 miles on it since july.. i did the entire rt66 and a few shows like " crusin the coast" in mississippi last month..not a trailer queen for sure..:D

[B]My project; 1938 Nash Ambassedore 6 going with a 283 chevy either a '58 or a '64 have both not sure about the tranny yet. a long way to go but in my oppinion as long as you are having fun and do what you can and do it safely then it is all good. And when you can do that and spend time with your "helper" (my 2 year old son is all about working on the car and I love it teaching him about the old iron that founded what we are today is priceless. This will be what they call a rat rod but it will be alot more user freindly I hope. It has juice brakes and an open drive line already just real hard to find parts for not your average rod project which is why I like it like to be a little different. http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG00024.jpg http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/a...creenImage.jpg http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG00025.jpg http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG00111.jpg
Attachment 53286Attachment 53285Hatfield29, I love it!
Personally I would refer to your style (our style) as more a "Resto-Rod" Where you modernize the driveline and try to keep everything else basically stock!
I drive a 36 D2 Dodge she's running a Aussie Hemi 6 265 C.I. a crappy auto and a BW diff, pretty simple stuff and bloody fun to drive :)
But is she a "Rat Rod" no, I detest that way over used term
it is a 27 chevy.
but every moving part is ford (302)
actually it is a 27/30/60 chevy
and a 61/64/81 ford
with the roof from a 63 willys jeep
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l2...running006.jpg
does this apply, I have rats livin in my garage along with the S-10 waiting for the 454 from my motor home
yea, stuffing a 454 in an S-10 qualifies as Rat Rod potential as long as you do the work your self!
Make it a 4 - 5 speed stick and you are real close....TH350 - 400 make any installation an easier conversion.
Putting in a stick can be a challenge, I know. My '50 Chevvy coupe has a 514 Caddy stuck to a Muncey 4-speed. Not your fathers Cadillac for sure..
