27 chevy p/u

Your chevy truck is coming along great. Always liked the early chevy and with what you had to start with, you've come along way. I'm running 2:76 in my 9" ford rear and get aroung 21 MPG. After I had the heads reworked the engine breath alot better and my mileage went from 16 to 21. Even with the work done on the little 305 that's putting out 303 HP and 313 lbs of torque, Cannot spin the wheels with those high gears Fogure I save on money for tires using those gears, because if I some 3:55 in there, I d probably go thru 2 sets in one summer:)

Looking good. Nice to see a Chevy of that vintage. Did that one have alot of wood? Always heard that gm used more wood than ford. I'll be watching this one. I've gotten to almost like the trucks over the cars..........

the skeleton was ALL wood.
i got about 70 feet of 1" tubing and maybe 10 feet of 2"
in that cab.;)
it was built like a horse drawn carriage
lots and lots of tiny tacks and wood screws.

i didnt like those seats.
i am going with boat seats instead.
i found some at walmart for 39 bucks each that will work fine.
now i am looking for cheapo steel wheels and front tires.

boy o boy am i glad i am only 5 foot 9.
it's a snug fit in that tiny cab!

I hope those boat seats aren't the plastic ones. Would hate the see them after a good launch.:CRY::LOL: Besides, I doubt they would pass inspection.

lets be realistic.
any kind of impact over about 15 mph is going to hurt.
you roll it= dead
t-boned=dead
hit a deer=dead
as far as seats go
i see guys with just old metal tractor seats and no backs.
the DMV doesnt care.
they just wanna see lap belts.

Was mainly thinking of a hard launch; the plastic seats I have in my driftboat if mounted in a car would break for sure with a good hard launch.

Yep, there are a lot of parts that go into building a car.:rolleyes: When I built my first hotrod (1915 Ford C-Cab replica) many years ago, I bought a beat-up '64 Chevy 4-door for $75, drove it home, and stripped it for parts. I used the engine, trans, rear end, drive shaft (after I shortened it), alternator, voltage regulator, horn relay, gas tank, master cylinder, brake pedal, light switch, ignition switch, wiper switch, fuse box, and radio. I rebuilt the engine (327) with fresh rings & bearings, but used all the other parts "as-is". I traded the radiator even-up for a smaller one. I figure it saved me a ton of money by using a donor car for all the major components...:3dSMILE:

Good to see you back in the pickup, Billy! The parts thing does get scary after awhile! Then, when the car is close to done, seems there's another $1,000.00 worth of incidentals just to get the thing finished and on the road!

drums and everything for front brakes
battery
starter
3.00 gear for rear end
seats
seat belts
horn
turned the rear drums

tomorrow is the swap meet
i am in search of wheels and front tires
turn signals/ brakelights
headlights
wiring stuff to make a harness
glass
rear 7/8" wheel cylinders/shoes/springs etc.

i had to get a 32 lowboy radiator because of the size of my rad frame.
it needed to be at most 18 "wide
and no more than 24" tall

the brown truck of happiness is going to be makin a few stops at the shop.
it is such a relief to get this ball rollin again.

i am waiting for the dust to clear from my buying frenzy.
then i will see what i have left to work with.
i still gotta find me some ford wheels and tires
i need two 15x5 on 4.5
and two 15x5 on 5.5 wheels.

i tried googling 1920's chevy hot/rat rods.
there arent any!
now admittedly all that wood is a huge PITA but it hardly seems possible that i am the only guy in the world stupid enough to do this.

I would hesitate to call , almost, any rod project stupid, some are just much more difficult than others. If you have the desire, time and money don't worry about it; when you are finished with it you wiil have the satisfaction that you have done something not many others would have had the guts to try.:)

i am finally going to hear this engine run .
i need to go get the tranny fluid today.
new parts are getting delivered daily.
man o man are we getting close!
at this point we are down to wiring it and plumbing the brakes.

i will not be able to give rides to big people.
i am 5.9 140 lbs.
and i am crammed in that car.
i am convinced humans were a lot smaller 84 years ago.

Looking good so far.

so the rear end is buttoned up.
filled with oil all seals replaced and ready to go.
front has new kingpins .
11"x 2" front brakes
11"x1 3/4" rear.
we used a master cylinder for a sprint car.
we needed a really small one and this one looks like the ticket.
this payday i will get the hoses and lines and the cars brakes are ready to be plumbed.
i found 3 16"x6" steel wheels that would be perfect for this.
i just need a fourth one.
i also found my dream tires for the rear.
they are for some kind of delivery truck or something.
they are really narrow and tall.

i am for sure going with radials.
i dont want to spennd all this money and time.
just to put tires on it that will make it handle like something from the 30's.

Coming along quite well, Billy!!! IMO good plan on the radial tires, bias are like one giant step backwards in handling!

p.s.
i have sat in it and made vroom vroom noises....

Way cool. I know a lot of guys think bias-ply is the only way to go, but they just don't have as good of a feel on a road trip as radials. (JMHO)

i may have found a line on some steel wheels for the 27 at a scrapyard across the state line.
about an hour away.
i am also waiting to rent my spare bedroom so i can throw that money at this project and finally finish it!
i bet another 1000 bucks will get it wired

with a 50-60"s kelly jeep hardtop roof.

What type of timing cover/water pump/front accessory package is that on the 302? That thing seems HUGE!!! Your dimension from the front of the head to the front of the water pump pulley looks to be at least 50% more than mine, and may be twice! That thing is LOOOOOOONG!

it is from a luxury econoline van that had power everything.

Hey Billy, the little welder, can't see it too clear... Is it a Clark? 220 or 110 volt? I've got to get me a little one, my big Lincoln is just too dang big for a lot of the stuff I do....

i got the wheels
they came of an old f-150
5.5 wide
15"s
$106 for four of em.
free lug nuts.

i dont know how i am gonna cover/clean up all those seams/welds all over the roof...

new wheels.

i hit them with industrial oven /grill cleaner

scrubbed them down

then degreased with brake cleaner.
