Any of you guy with a V8 in the front? wpould like top see a few pics have & finish?
I remember back in the 70's when i was in high school this guy driving one! never have seen an other one on the road...
Thanks ratty41
looks like he did a nice clean job!
There was a chap in Kingston (Ontario) who built a VW with a mid mounted Buick Aluminum V8 back in the 60's. He used a Porche transaxle and Porche brakes all around. He used to race it in the sporty crowd races and actually drove it on the highway to the track. It was quite a sleeper.
I understand he used the drivetrain from a homebuilt formula libre race car (also home built) that had been wrecked in a race.
Last time I saw the car was in a mall parking lot in Brampton many years later so it apparently survived beyond its racing days.
Sounds like a sleeper..
Yeah, it was. Except for two small grills in the front hood. the Porsche wheels and a slightly lowered stance, it looked completely stock. I've heard that the owner loved sucking out performance cars while cruising down the 401.:)
Here are a few more VW/Anglia picture....
at the Houston autorama in november there was a whole section of these things Mostly ratrod surf style
I never liked VW rods, I think that they go against the natural order, but I have to say this one actually doesn't look bad for german junk: http://socalook.com/gallery_hidalgo64.html
It would be better with a front engine with no hood and a 30's grille though.
Smooth lookin' or not, it's still no american rod.
On a side note, did anyone else think that the T-shirt with the Maltese Cross on Volksrods.com seemed a little out of taste, given the nazi background of Volkswagon?
well that's your Fink-ing point of view...& i think your out voted..
I just have to jump in here. I have hot rodded Fords, Chevys, Anglias, and VW's and I have had a blast with all of them. I am just a car guy. I was also part of the Rat Patrol build team and we had a blast building that car the old school way. (Everything built by hand) Here is a quick video of the end result.

I keep trying to find an old dub to put together. Most everything I find is either rotted out or terribly overpirced!!! Speedway is selling the bolt on front for the tube axle now. Heck with the price of fuel this summer, sure would make a cheap cruizer to knock around in!!!
I picked this one up for $100
I narrowed the front suspension to tuck the tires and added dropped spindles and disc brakes.

Too bad there arent many bugs around here, Id love to pick one up and use it as a "hot rod beater" lol. Kinda like a rat rod. Id like to do something alot like the one above! Looks good but isnt over done.

When i was working out in Maricopa, AZ an old bug rolled up. But i didnt know it was an old bug, all i saw was a really low, right front rounded fender with a big whitewall stuffed into it. I decided to go outside an investigate it and i was absolutely shocked to see it was a 60's beetle. The guy had put a roof from a 70's beetle on it, chopped it about 6inches, a rear window from a different year bug in it, narrowed the body a few inches, shaved it, and shot it with tan primer, then put old rallys on it and big ole biasply whites on the back and whites on the front. I couldnt believe what i was seeing. It was like i was in some prank video where someone stripped an old rat rod and threw all the parts on a Beetle!!! I guess i missed the start of that whole trend completely because theres theres not many hot rod VW's are running around Chicago.
And also i must say, it was good quality work and i give respect for the time and $ into it, but i still cant believe theres a whole crowd out there who modifies old beetles into "rods". It amazes me. What will they think of next?
So, truth be told, i began looking at my 77 C10 and my 99 Sonoma in a different light because of gas prices, and the little hampsters in my head started turning the wheels and cranking out hot rod VW ideas... And im still not sure whether these ideas or good or bad... But a slight desire to turn heads in a rodded out VW is floating around in my brain.
So what year VW is that? Was that a mistake or is there a VW motor in there? Or am i just naive and VW made boats?Quote:

Hey, HemiTcoupe,
The car http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s...W/MVC-179S.jpg
looks A heck of a lot like "Suzie The Little Blue Coupe" it's an old 50's Disney cartoon, Google it.
I used to think about this VW stuff night and day. I had a gold metalflake dune buggy for a comuter car with a black vinyl top that had Model T based windows in the back on a 'cut '60 pan and a 1600 engine with a Norris cam and dual port heads. Also a '67 with a Judson supercharger. Lots of fun! The beauty of it was that you started with 26-28 mpg and no matter what you did with the cam and heads etc, you would still get 22-24 mpg! I am only replying because several VWs I have looked at lately had badly rusted (dangerous) pan rot, especially on the battery side. As I recall there is a 1" square upward indented channel all along the pan under the doors and you can buy or make 1" square steel bars to weld or bolt up in that channel which greatly strengthens the perimeter of the pan which is very important since there is no frame, just a steel pan. Those steel bars should be able to save a half rotted pan along with some weld-in sheet steel (heavy gauge).
Hey what I really want is one of those gyrocopters with the VW pusher propeller behind the seat. The rotor is not powered so you just find a nice flat highway and rev it up and take off and then land on a highway between cars on some backroad blacktop surface? The nice thing about that set up is if you run out of gas at 5000 feet the unpowered roter just brings you down like a maple seed. I suppose the air-space people and the highway patrol would have some problems with takeoffs and landings from highways but when we were kids we were promised that "in the future everybody would have a commuter-copter", what happened to that idea? Maybe it had a mid-air collision?

As much as I don't like bugs I would really like a volkswagen thing to turn into a dune cruiser. I dated a girl that had one once (to this day the most underpowerd car I have ever driven) and it was cherry. Nice big roll cage, the doors would release and come off real easy. take it and drop a more powerful motor in it and it would be a lot of fun.
