I will agree with you mike if he hook up the positive to the battery and it gives a spark,starts welding the clamp to the post and begins to start the motor.would tell me he has a bare wire some ware shorting out and if it trying to start this was his problem to begin with he needs to look for any wires that are bare that are laying up agiinst maybe a header pipe

I unhooked the small wire and all others from the selenoid. The only two wires I had were the large starter and the battery. Still turned over like before.

Ahhhh...Good hint. I will use the tester instead. Tap the selenoid to see if it disengages.

the alt. should carry the motor after you get it running and the starter disengsged. if your starter is staying engaged and wont stop turning, then stop worrying about the alt. how you gonna keep the motor running to check the alt. if youer running the motor with the starter engaged then you are gonna mess up the starter and flywheel. until you get the motor starting and running on its own forget about the alt. take it off the motor and put it on the floor and fix your starter, than put the alt back on the motor and check it. forget the alt, all its doing now is confusing you more. :cool:

all he needs to do there is take the starter cable of of the sol. and take a test light and see if he has voltage there all of the time that will tell him where the problem is.:rolleyes:

if youer hooking up the wires right then you need to be looking at the starter. take ohm meter and check the big bolt going into the staeter and make sure its not shorted to the starter case. :whacked:

Starter isn't the problem,I'm pretty sure of that. It isn't continually attempting to start,although with the selenoid stuck,it theoretically should. But,problem is only located between the selenoid and alternator. Just want to make sure that the alternator is going to charge the battery. If it won't carry the motor's load,then will it charge the battery? If the battery becomes weak it can burn the alt up. Don't want this to happen is all.

Not true. Look at the drawing for the wiring. You really need to seperate the 2 circuits, or you will never figure this out. :)

danny Sammyprgandy is saying 2 dif. things, the first post he had a dead short, the last post the alt. wont keep the motor running so i cant tell if hes got a short or bad alt. ive told him a couple of times the alt dont have nothing to do with the truck starting. so i dont know how to help him. :confused:

Hooooleeee CRAP!! Look guys...I have NEVER seen this before. I replaced the selenoid,wired it to diagram,which was the way it was wired originally. Hooked up the positive and...yeah!!! no sparks or false starting. Problem solved,right? Not!! Heard a whining from the engine. I assumed that it was the alternator trying to catch the battery up and loading down. So,i went to turn the truck off and the engine quit. The battery began to spark at the terminals and both terminals began to smoke. i disengaged the positive and came in here to say...WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON??????Help me,guys,help me.

It sounds like your starter is still engaged, or youve got a dead short. i still dont see Danny why the short couldnt be at the starter. if his starter bolt is shorted to the case, wouldnt that be the same if it was shorted to the headers? the sol would have to be bad also, but it sounds like hes got more than one problem anyway. Sammyprgandy go out to your truck and take the starter wire off of the sol., hook your bat back up and take a test light and see if you have voltage on the post. if you dont get someone to try to start the truck, and then check and see if you have voltage on the post while the key is on start. then come back and tell us if you have voltage all the time or just when you are starting the truck. dont put the wire back on until you tell us when the sol. post, on the starter side is hot.

Voltage is not on the starter post when I initially hook up the battery.

Voltage is on when I put key in the ignition position.
