thanks a lot mopar!!! you truly are the man.:D
A cousin had a '53 Merc back in the mid 1960s, with the pushbutton door releases. His car had the chrome trim removed from the front of the bulges behind the doors, and scoops like the '66 Shelby cut in. The buttons were back in there about as far as you could reach, and there was a key switch inside the grille surround to lock the car.
Worked great until the battery went dead. There was some sort of lock for the hood, that you had to release from inside, and he ended up breaking out a wind wing at one point to reach the door handle.
Learned to drive in that car. Had a three speed with a floor shifter - handle was about three feet long! Throw was something ferocious. Actually, it came up to about halfway between the top of the seat and the top of the dash, and was at least a 10-12 inch throw.
Cool old car. Thanks for bringing Bill and his early low-rider to mind. You guys are talking about SoCal; he died about 30 years ago, and is buried in Inglewood. You might honk at him if you ever get your '56 by the big cemetary there - I think Bill would like that.
Same guy had a Monte Carlo SS 454 when he died. Great car - he and his kids loved surprising folks with the Monte.
It would be my pleasure to give Bill a hunk, no prob! Do you have any pics of this 53 Kustom?
