Another lesson!

Man I have been trying to do a complete mock up on my car for a few weeks. Well I brouht a modified c-6 trans last year from my machine shop, who the owner was selling it for a friend.;) ;) Me being limited in these areas, I trusted his opinion and brought the reverse shifting trans with a 4500 stall. My engine is a big block 460, bulit for racing and some conner cutting sometimes. To make a long story faster, the c-6 trans will not bolt up to the big block ford which unknown to me and maybe a few others that not all c-6 trans mount the same. This c-6 is for a small block ford which I thought olny c-4 trans fit.
Questions:
1). I found some c-6 adaptor plates of line anyone ever use them?
2). Can I put this c-6 trans internals in a different housing that would fit my big block.
3). If the adaptor plate can be use; can the performance trans handle the torque of a big block ford with big cam and torque and horse power.

460 and 400 trannys are similar, no other ones fit. When it comes to Fords, I tell people, always get the trans and ring gear with the engine. From bitter experience, "Parts from a red one won't fit a blue one!!" Never had much luck with adapters, either. The ring gear balance weights change every month or so of manufacture, so be sure to take yours with the engine when you balance it. The internals should fit any pattern C-6 case. Be sure what you're buying, there are lots of different ones.

Well, I believe there are three different classes of C6 bolt patterns and you obviously have one of the other 2. It could be the FE's or the 289, 302, 351C/W blocks. You need the bolt pattern for the 351M, 400, 429, 460 engines. It is the bolt pattern that is wrong (on the tranny itself), and not the crank pilot size on your torque converter, correct? The crank pilot size on your torque converter is probably wrong as well, maybe not. With the 460 you'll need a 1.375" crank pilot on the converter.

If it were me, I wouldn't bother with the adapter plates, but rather just find the correct tranny for your block's bolt pattern.

Also, why so much stall (4500 rpm) on your torque converter? That is really high IMO, and I can't see how it would be streetable unless this is just a racing machine.

Best thing to do is to call a good tranny shop in your area and tell them your problem and see what they would recommend, that's what I would do. I've been down other "problem" roads in the past and in the end it is just so much quicker to talk to someone who has/can deal with these types of things.

I hope this is a strip-only car, 'cause like 53fatfndr alluded to, a 4,500 rpm stall converter ain't gonna work too well on the street. Been there, done that. It's sorta like a hard-core shift kit on the street, it's fun for 10 minutes, after that it's just a pain in the ass for the rest of the time you own the car.

Ok, I'm sure you all understand. Yes I would like to drive it on the street some times. And yes it will see plenty of strip time. The mistake or at least part of it is we think we can have both. I don't have much trans exprience, and hoping that the case, and the convertor is all I have to change or can.:rolleyes:

What RPM's is your torque curve? That is what you need to do to find what converter to get, at least that is what I do.

53fatfndr, The engine is newly built. Hasn,t been ran yet. Plan to have it broken in and dyno this summer. Took trans to the shop with another c-6 trans so it could be transfer to the bbf case. At this time we are going to check out all numbers and find out what I can do.

That sounds good. Putting that thing on the dyno is the best way to determine what torque converter to get. I think you'll be happy with your results. Keep us posted.
