I'm gonna puke.....
I wouldn't do 3 inches. I wouldn't go more than 2 inches. Ever watch Horsepower TV and they had the chopped glass bodied one? Looks ok but with a steel body you better look at a lot of work and make sure you can weld, etc. Now are you asking how much to chop or how to do it?
One word, Foose.
I did a 2 door wagon a number of years back, went like 2 1/2 in the back and 3 at the windshield posts. Also channelled it about 3". The car left this area about 7 or 8 years back, think it wound up in St. Louis area last I heard. Never have done a tri-5 sedan, but I wouldn't get too radical on the cut.
Check out the books by Tex Smith. He has one specifically on How to Chop Tops and another on customizing in general. Here's a link to a list of his titles.

I fixed a small blazer that had rolled over. cut the a posts in the middle, installed tubing reinforcing inside. was using a pick up roof front section only the front of the blazer was mangled added extra roof cross members, gussets at the top of the b posts etc my son drove it to work for a couple of years no problems then gave it to his wife's 14 year old brother the kid off roaded it for about 3 years on their ranch when i saw it last it had a lot of cracks I don't think i would do one again. unless it was a trailer queen and didn't get driven that much.
