I have a 68 mustang with an aftermarket 302. It has an "H-pipe" exhaust system that has the tailpipes come out in front of the rear wheels. It also has cut-outs that come out below the middle of the doors facing outward, like the rear pipes. Since I usually drive with my cut-outs open, would I be able to put an "afterburn" type flamethrower exhaust system in the cut outs? would it make flames come out all four exhaust exits? is that safe? what if i just want the flames out the cut outs?

You gotta be kidding.
You're riding around in a potentially flammable vehicle that carries it's own fuel supply that could ignite at the least provocation with spectacular results that would inflict serious injuries on you and the innocent bystanders.
To me, flamethrowers are beyond stupid, but what I'd like to know is what you expect to accomplish with them?
Well, I have a few extra bucks and would like to do something a little different to my car. Having little prior knowledge of how flamethrowers work and what exactly they involve, posting this thread was one of my first steps to find out information about this system. I did not post this thread to take a poll on whether members thought flamethrowers were "stupid"--I posted it to try to figure out what results I could expect from an "H-Pipe" exhaust system with cut-outs and flamethrowers...
I'll try to be more specific next time so as not to confuse the more zealous members... ;)

I thought about flamethrowers on my pickup truck, but the thought of stabbing my shins on the hot dog skewers was too painful... and besides, I burn my eyebrows now on the regular BBQ. Imaging what flames at crotch level would do?

I'm a pretty easy-going guy, but flamethrowers really make me wonder.
We spend lots of time, money, blood, sweat and tears getting these cars built, make the wiring and fuel lines - among other things - as safe as possible with quality items, most of us carry a fire extinguisher or two and to add flamethrowers goes beyond my understanding.
Having the flames very close to underneath the door looks very dangerous . . . assuming your cutouts are in the usual place.
Not to mention scorched paint.
And then there's the problem of exiting the car if the flamethrowers don't shut down.
So what is hot rodding all about to you?
Having a good looking, good handling, fast little car or sitting in the parking lot pumping out flames cuz none of the above qualifications were met?
I'm not calling you stupid, but misguided does come to mind.
We both know flamethrowers are not the answer and never have been....
I'm in the "I'm against it" crowd, too. We all have opinions; that's mine.
If it doesn't make it go faster, handle better, or brake better, why bother??? Somebody else can wow the fans, I got better things to do!!!! Not even counting how unsafe a setup that would be......
Just to throw a little gas on the fire . . . I know, entirely inapproriate comment - a magazine guy posted an excellent, well done flame thrower article on a hot rod site a while back - and no, I ain't telling.
It was really obvious the article was originally slated for publication and also obvious the major hot rod type magazine told him to dump the article cuz it wasn't getting published no how, no way.
Do ya think the magazine might have gotten it's socks sued off if the article was printed, somebody built a flame-thrower from their instructions and neglected to fix the minor gas leak at the gas tank/fuel line juncture and the whole damn drive-in and a few people were burned all to hell and gone when the flamethrowers lit off the puddle of gasoline under the car?
How about if a guy with propane enhanced flamethrowers didn't look behind him, lit off the big flamers and burned down a roadster that just happened to be running 97 carburetors that just happened to be leaking a touch?
Not that 97's ever leak.
Probably be some blood leakage among other things....

Geezus, what a sad situation and the pain lasts for months and years and he never did look right.
Light off a set of flamers at a Saturday night rod run and the only ones who will be thrilled will be the children.
Anyone with any maturity at all will look down at you and probably ask you to exit the premises post-haste while they cast aspersions and bad names in your direction.
Most rod runs I go to have a cop present.
I'd imagine you would get more than a simple traffic ticket once you pulled that little trick.
There's a lot of laws that could be applied and one would probably be confiscation of the vehicle or at the least it would be towed.
So if you can't use the flamers at a rod run, where would you use them?
It sounds like you have a nice little car and I'm sure with a little thinking you can figure out something to buy for it that will reap much better rewards than being known as the idiot with flamethrowers.
you guys are rediculous .... granted flamethrowers are dangerous ... but in the right hands they can be safely used for amusement purposes ... the problem is that so many people in the hot rod community are nothing but hard asses .... the same people who frown on me because i have an import ... now i know my clica isn't fast but hey it holds it's own ... and plus mine will start every morning no matter how cold it is... so before bashing on one person for trying to do something fun ... think about why you even are bothered with it ... if your going to worry ... how about making sure they do it right ... you probably wont change thier mind about it but you can probably make sure no one gets hurt.

It seems to me that what a lot of people don't get on this and other forums is that the forums are geared to a certain audience. The people who generally hang out here are pretty much into "traditional" hot rods, muscle cars, race cars and customs.
The man asked a question and got several honest responses (which by the way I concur with).
Obliviously, if 68Stang is still determined to do this he should check with other forums that could provide the answer he is looking for (if you read this 68 Stang, I'm not trying to drive you off, you are welcome here, but it appears that most people here just think flamethrowers are a bad idea).
Now you come along, categorize (ATTACK) the regular members of the forum, tell us how we should have responded while making no suggestions of your own on how the guy who asked the original question should do it.
If you stick around here long enough, I think you will find a majority of the regulars are more than willing to provide answers to questions related to the interests of the group, WITHOUT attacking those who we disagree with AS LONG as they are not attacked first.

I bought my hot rod because I think the diversication is great!
There is so many different tastes out there and they seem to all be excepted.
Flame throwers go Way back.
So do additudes. LOL
I've seen hot rods I would never get behind the wheel of because of poor construction, yet some think their killer.
America is all about freedom of speach but lets not bash or name call a fellow car lover. (import or not)

I got interested in hot rods in the 50's.
Never saw or heard of a flame thrower exhaust at that time.
I thought flame throwers got popular just a few years ago. Never heard or saw anything about them until the new gone in 60 seconds movie.
