Is there any reason I can't use a voltage regulator from a '67 Camaro on a '55 Chevy? I got a cool vintage finned regulator cover on eBay, but it fits the smaller later model regulator, not the '55 model.

Unless my memory is totally gone, I seem to remember that the 55 Chevy used a 6-volt system.
Tech, it's officially called "oldtimers" disease and happens to everyone......as I remember. The 55 was the first year of the 12 volt chebbies.
Isnt a 67 camaro an alternator car? Dont think that the regulators interchange but then.....I forget too.

the 55 used a 12 volt system
67 had a external reg. so id say you should be able to hook it up to the 55 reg. or use the 55 alt.
'55 had 12 volt in the 8cyl cars only 6cyl cars had 6 volt, think the 6 volt ran until the 235 I6 was replaced with the 194-250's in 1962.

I remember seeing that somewhere that the 8cyl cars in '55 were 12 volt and the 6 cyl cars were 6 volt, in 1955 at least, I looked this up about a year ago and I may be wrong, I will look it up quick, well, they are all -12 volt, guess I was wrong. edit, the 1955 235 I6 Corvette motor ( rated at 150 hp ) was the last 6 volt used in 1955 in only that vette motor which was the base motor. '55 was also the last year the Corvette had a 6cyl and the only year that the corvette had a 6 cyl and an 8cyl in production at the same time.
no big deal, but that about when i started full time mechanicing and after 55, 6 volt was pretty much gone. vw still had it.
Okay, my '55 is a Bel Air with a 265 c.i. V8 and a generator. According to my shop manual, all '55s passenger vehicles have 12-volt sytems, and I used to have a '55 1/2 ton truck with a V8 which was 12-volt as well. Can't vouch for the 6 cylinder versions. The '67 Camaro does have an alternator, and I'm thinking that might mean that the voltage regulator would be different, but I don't know enough about electrical systems to know just how different it would be. I don't want to convert the '55 to an alternator just now cuz it has factory power steering with the generator-mounted pump and I don't want to change to late-model power steering. Maybe I should just let well enough alone. Don't want to screw up the electrical system just to have a purty voltage regulator.
