Should I be ashamed?

Maybe this is good or maybe not, but I'm willing to admit my mind isn't quite normal.
Sometimes I look at something and see an entirely different use for it.
To keep my shop from getting dusty, I decided to sand my fender outside. This bin just happened to be by the door. It seemed to be the right height, plus it's on wheels! Note the tie strap to hold the fender on.
In case you're wondering why it doesn't fall over, it's about 1/3 full of grass clippings for ballast.
So far I have used it to sand, cut, grind and weld on.
So, should I be ashamed of myself for being such a nut or should I get a patent?

Go for the patent. My can has several different colors of overspray on it from holding home projects.

Fill the bottom with steel, and patent! I dont think the patent office will accept grass clippings as a spec:LOL:

Of course you should be ashamed! You're supposed to go out and buy a custom-built, solid stainless, double-throwdown whatchamacallit from Boyd or somebody like that! What are you, some kind of Hippie?

thats great... my dumpster like that has overspray all over it... guess my neighbors know where the paint smell comes from.....lol

It appears to a municipal bin and therefore paid for by taxes.

Don't be ashamed! we call that "multi purposing"

I personally use our plastic lawn chairs! They work great for supporting odd shaped body panels.

After several painting projects, they begin to look like pieces of art!:D

Ha! That's good! I'll have to remember that for later...just curious....How tall are you? OK, so, besides the waste can...what's been your most valuable tool so far?

watch out on the welding .i got one to hot they burn GEAT they are very waxy had some in it that started the burn hot pice of steel melted thru the lid :eek: and had a nice fire make up a sawhorse they do not burn as easy

The general consensus so far seems to be that this Ultimate Work Bench is not only acceptable but actually has been in practice for some time.

I tried to join the Hippie Club, I haven't seen them that excited since Earth Day. They sputtered something about my burning in Hell for driving a #!*&$@# 10 MPG high emission vehicle and rejected my application. Don't let them fool you, they are not as peaceful as you might think....

A. 5'5"
Q. What is my most valuable tool?
A. I would have to say besides my head and my hands, it would be my air compressor. Although I wish I had a bigger one. (Where have I heard that before?)

That's a good idea......... I also use mine, for baby sitting with the neighborhood kids. You can stuff 3-4 kids easylee and then a small amount of Duct tape around the lid will do it.

Thanks...I think i'll invest in one of those metal cans for my future workbench...they are a few inches shorter and would probably fit my application a bit better lol...

Dhotrod, your still using duct tape? What I found works best is to get the snap-down style and use about 20 dry-wall screws. The short ones. Then you cant get Anything out of there!:D.

Oh, and just FYI, I use this to store pennies, not kids:LOL::LOL:

I am late to this post but anyways, I do that same thing. Mine has overspray all over it too. Looks like this has to get added to one of those lists of "you know if your a hot rodder if...". heh Then you can say "you know your a hot rodder if your trash can has overspray all over it." Or something like that.

Nice one ! down here we would call it Kiwi ingenuity. A great idea if you want the cheap hassle free option of hanging a guard though. I usually hang car parts off the wifes cloathsline when i am painting things up. S :3dSMILE:

Haha. She scream at you? I use a small tree and hand stuff off the branches... I have to make sure I hang it up a foot higher than I want because all the weight pulls down on it. Can you say "RedNeck"? Haaaaaaha

yes to both :LOL: specially when the washing was on the line as well.

My only question is how do you keep from getting a bare spot when painting over that tow strap?**) dont worry about being shunned because you don't have a $20 body stand. Think of it as multi tasking... when you sand, your dust will already be thrown away!:D Keep up the backyard engineering!

C'mon folks,

We're all guilty of using something that was not designed for our purpose. Years ago we used wooden milk crates instead of jack stands. We used bricks, rocks, or debri for a chock block. Or banged out body dents with a claw hammer. I just used a $12 Come-Along slung from a tree for an engine hoist. You should see my 52 F-1 cab sitting up on two wooden stair cases from a mobile home. Sometimes you gotta work with what you have.

Try this one:

A small "little red wagon" with the floor cut out. It makes a great engine stand, that you can pull the engine around to where you need it.

My buddy uses a little red wagon for his welding cart. It works really well. and it matches his welder. Awww cute:LOL:

and.....I doubt I'm the only one who used to have a retired kitchen sink and a NAPA $17.00 fuel pump for a parts washer complete with a 5 gallon bucket under the drain for the solvent????

Mine was REALLY first rate.....Double stainless sinks with a metal cabinet. Used the one on the left for stanasol and the pump, the sink on the right for letting the parts drip dry!!!!!

Nope, you're not the only one. My plumber buddy gave me a stainless two-holer.

how about running a set of JE pistons thru the dish washer ? boy it did a hell of a good job. they were new and did some dome work on them and they needed a good washing so :HMMM: or boiling piston over the stove to help get the pins out of some new old stock trw pistons . i pick and filed my 34 ford truck fenders in my room .useing set of my moms chairs:whacked:

Here are some more confessions...
I guess I got it from my Dad, I remember watching him rebuild carburetors on the kitchen table. And my Mom would cut him gaskets out of Tide boxes. We didn't have a lot of money, but we sure had a lot of fun with those $50 cars he'd buy. It seemed normal to us to have to:
Start the Henry J by using a long screwdriver through the floor.
Push start the GMC panel truck.
'Pop' the carburetor on the Studebaker with your hand because the choke didn't work.
Breakdown, hitchhike home and use one of the other cars to tow you home.
Change an engine with the old homemade pipe swingset.
Gee I miss my Dad...
At least I still have his truck!

yes i miss my dad to .and i have his GTO too i spent a lot of time with him and he passed at 40 years old .i was 10 at the time and wish he could be with me now :( that was 32 years ago and i still have a had time with it. time dose not help to much with it

What a small world. My dad was just a few months from 40 and I was 10 when he died. Almost 41 years ago.

Old timers have been using such a tool for years.

It's called a 55 gallon barrel. Just be sure one end is open and the barrel is clean. Can cut and weld right on top of it/.
