A Favour/Challenge

Ok, as I posted a few weeks ago, my wife bought a 1921 Maxwell and I have come to the conclusion that I want to rod it rather than restore it. Here is what it looks like. I still have no pics of it. LINK

So I am asking for a favour by some who know how to use “photo shop” etc. and who know how to build a rod. Could you please play with it within the next few months (I have no idea how big of a favour I am asking ‘cause I do not know how to play with the computer to that extent) and then post a picture of it along with at least a few details as to what I would have to do accomplish that look.

It shouldn't be that much different looking than a '26-'27 Model T. The bodies look very similar.

DennyW gave you the best advice, polish it up like a piece of gold. I also did some research, there was only 100,000 Maxwells made in the USA. You got yourself a piece of history there. Some cars should never be turned into hot rods, they should be restored. The Maxwell falls into the same category as the Cord, Tucker, Zepher, Hupmobile, etc. If memory serves me, Jack Benny drove a Maxwell. Jack Benny and his side kick Rochester made more jokes about that car. Have some fun, pull into a full serve gas station, and order ONE GALLON of gas like Jack Benny did when he did the gasoline commercials.

In a PM you asked for my advice on hot rodding it. In a post started by JunkYardJeff, there was a picture of a model A with the front wheels set way back, titled "What was he thinking". That's what yours will end up like if you try to hot rod it.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I will have to rethink the rodding idea.

Danny and lakota, you seem to be under the impression that my car is in the shape of the picture posted, but it isn’t. Mine is a rust bucket. I (mrmustang) only included the picture to help everyone picture the style of it.

As for it being a piece of history, good points. But if I do that, my wife could never drive it. It is way too complicated. It has the accelerator on the column, the timing advance on the column, and two priming thimbles under the hood, plus I think it has “Cranking by Armstrong”.

As for it looking silly in the end as that picture which was posted, that would only happen if one was to shorten the wheel base, which I wouldn’t do, in fact, I was considering lengthening it.

It looks somewhat like a 26-27 Ford. Should make a nice rod.

If it has a Chrysler heritage, how about a 340 with a torqflite?

I'd keep it stock bodied, but ultimately you need to build it to please yourself, and no one else. Opinions are nice, but the hot rod hobby is about personalizing a car to reflect your own personality. Some of our members forget that this is "clubhotrod".............. not "clubmaximumresale" or "clubmuseumcar". Make sure you are having fun with it.

If it is such a collectors item, you might consider finding a buyer for it and then putting that money into something more suitable for rodding. I haven't a clue as to what a '21 Maxwell might be worth, much less what you might get for yours. I'm just trying to say that you might be able to get yourself a base for your rod that is in better shape.

I was thinking of lengthening the front end 8 inch or so and then making some front fenders which would blend into the body, maybe even slanting the rad area with the bottom ten inches further forward than the top.

I think it was Parmenter who posted a beautiful creation a few weeks ago which he had apparently seen at an auto show, I forget the thread.

I know I know, this whole thing is frustrating. I thought hod rodding was supposed to be fun hahaha!

I have no idea what it is worth, I paid 3 grand Cdn for it which is probably only eight hundred dollars of real money, so no big deal at this point.
