I been thinking about getting a trailer so I can haul my Chevy around without having to drive it, I see quite a few around 4 sale that seem like they could work but, they are all single axle. My '51 Chevy is 3,600 LBS, will any single axle handle this or am I gonna need a tandem axle? all these trailers are utility trailers that have no floor in them, I would need to add ramps and treads, but there frames look big enough and strong enough.
On most tandem axle car trailers the axles are rated at 3500 lbs gross weight each. That translates to 7000 lbs capacity including the weight of the trailer and the load thats on it. Tandem axle is the way to go. I'm with mrmustang on the brakes. Also buy a matched set of tie downs. One for each corner of the vehicle. Don't cut corners on safety.
my dad's '72 C10 is set up for towing our '23 boat, likely if I'm going to a carshow, he's going also with his truck . I'll eventully get truck that could tow. would a camper trailer frame say 26' tandem axle with surge brakes be good enough for towing? I know a place that dismantels camping trailers for the steel and they do sell compleate frames with axles and all for utility trailers, u just need to hang new lights and finish them off how u want them.Quote:

my dad has a class 5 hitch on the truck, it was the only thing TSC had in stock that would fit it, so he bought it, just don't have the anti sway bars.
Matt,if you check around you can find good deals on car trailers. Keep in mind that in this state you have to have a self enclosed breakaway system that will lock the brakes should it come detatched from the tow vehicle.While I've never been stopped on my way to Afton,Five mile point,or Accord,I do know several who have,and boy did they get nailed by the judge. My pal and I got his hydralic deck trailer at a car show in Jersey,offered him 2 grand at the end of the show,and towed it home with us. We since added an electric winch,and have towed home disabled cars from as far as Ohio,so it has almost paid for itself already.Don't waste your time on illegal junk. breakaway system, what's that? only thing I thought was needed is safty chains, is this for car trailers only? both my dad's boats only have surge brakes and safty chains, maby the surge brake will lock the brakes up when the toung digs in?. I keep looking for trailers listed as car trailers, some I'v seen do have surge brakes, most of them I see have electric brakes.Quote:

Don't think the insurance Co. would understand having a car and trailer going through a house or injuring some one. Lots of weight there.
