Engine accessories info

Hello all - Just a question on which brands or types of accessories to use on my 350/330 SBCcrate motor. It's in a '46 Ford 2dr sedan. Would like your opinions on Alt., Starter (mini-or full size),AC Compressor? and PS pump (GM Saginaw type or aftermarket w/remote reservoir? Will be using Vintage Air stuff, would like single wire Alt, and steering is an early mustang power rack. I would appreciate anyone's input who has dealt with any of the many well known or aftermarket brands. I would like everything to be in Chrome!

You should be able to use the stock starter unless you've got large headers, and then you'll have to go to a mini starter. Stock power steering pump will work ok, or you can modify a mount for a Ford pump. As far as AC, make sure you have enough room for the compressor and all the other components. If this a show car, and you're going to trailer it, a one wire altenator is ok. If it's a daily driver, I strongly suggest that you run a two wire system. Run a long trigger wire up to the fuse block. Hide it in with the other wires. A one wire system has the trigger wire connected to the charging lug and reads the voltage from the battery or charging lug. It always reads 12.5-14.5 volts. It won't charge untill you hit high RPM's. If you run a trigger wire to the fuse box, then it's reading the actual voltage that all the accessories are getting, and will adjust the internal regulator when more voltage is needed. Then you get brighter lights and a good strong spark. For accessories, check out the local speed shops or surf the net.

I like the remote power steering reservoirs, makes the pump smaller and easier to mount out of the way. I use the Sanden compressors, small size and again easier to mount and have out of the way. As for starter, I much prefer the smaller sized high torque starter to the clunky, heavy, old fashioned big ones. A smaller starter means more header room. Getting the headers tucked in IMO looks better and leaves more room for the steering shaft.
