Hello. I have a wiring diagram showing Fords electrical system, and am now considering going with the GM one wire alternator. Using the Ford voltage regulator, can someone tell me how to wire it? The regulator has 4 contacts; I, A, S, F for ignition, alternator, stator, and field. I also do not have the GM alternator in front of me, so could someone suggest the way to hook it up?

You do realize that a GM one wire alternator has an internal regulator, dont you?

The first question is about hooking up a one wire alternator.
You will not need to use your Ford regulator.

Yep, they're right. You can remove the regulator and all that related wiring, and simply run a #10 wire from the batt or + post on the alternator to the positive battery terminal. That's it. No switch or anything needed.

This is truly a "painless wiring" diagram....if you get the "connection"

You are overthinking your decision. Put a one wire on it and get it done. I ran one wire on my roadster for 7 or 8 years of daily driving, have had one on my Jeep for 3 or 4 years, and am going to install one on both of the projects now in my shop, and probably every one to follow. Already have the one sitting ready to go on the T bucket.
They are simple to install and you don't have to worry about the added component (regulator) and where to mount it. Plus it eliminates a lot of extra wires.

Don't turn a 1 wire hook up into a science fair project. The GM single wire alternator, as Robot and others said, just bolts on and hooks up as illustrated...........
Pretty common sense approach to the differences in the two systems and why a 3 wire hook up makes better sense unless of course you are satisfied with a somewhat compromised electrical system. IMHO that equates to putting a 300+ hp engine in front of an early Ford drive train and expecting it to last. :rolleyes:Quote:
