9" ford

I'm cutting down a 9" ford rear and have to shorten it up by 4". I know the 9" had offset pion and wanted to know the correct way to cut. Is 1" off on side and 3" off the other ok or shold it be 1 1/2" and 2 1/2" or is there any correct way to do this?

2 and 2 from the middle some say the end just because you can buy new ends.

Depends on where you want the pinion to be.

If you want the pinion to stay in the same place relative to the car, cut 2" off each side. If you want to move the pinion 1", cut 3" from one side and 1" from the other. If you want to move the pinion 2", cut all 4" from one side.

The best way is to mock it up under the car, measure tape where you THINK you want to cut it, then measure twice (or three or four times) and cut once.

You don't want to be saying "I cut it twice, and it's still too short."

Since I will want to keep the pinion in the same place I'll cut off 2" from each side(and will measure 5-6 times) Once cut a frame that I had mocked up and did a quick measurement(to quick) and wound up about an 1" short and had to recut the other side but never looked right after that.

The person who I got my Brookville 1930 roadster from made the quick decision regarding narrowing the 9" Lincoln rearend. So I ended up with a rearend with axle tubes so short when the tires are mounted there is less than 1/4" clearance between the tire and the inner fenderwell. So since I have a housing of no use I decided to not use the disc brakes or the 3rd member which is a posi. Rushing causes nothing but HEADACHES & mistakes.
