My earlier photos were kind of "posed." I didn't have the hood fully installed, and some of the glass wasn't installed. But . . . here it is, ready for the road - well, it will be, when the dang title gets here from Richmond, and I can pick up some plates.
Interior upholstery and new hood sides have to wait until this winter. I'm not wasting the rest of the summer with the car in the shop. It's drivin' time. :D
Looks great Jack. It's surprising to hear how they have to attach the vin plate themselves. I thought it would just come in an envelope and you would do it.
I would be flinching too, watching some non-car person cutting into my ride.:eek:

Your car is so sweet .. I have to kids and a dog I give ya for it... The dog is good at pulling sleds and the kids well there go for putting on wrestling shows .
Today, I decided to do a little upholstery in the trunk. Because Gibbon's support woodwork was so hosed up, I had to make some mounting strips from 1-1/2 x 1/2 poplar. That took me a couple of days. I could have made it pretty, but the only function is to hold the upholstery panels, so it is what it is.

Next, I cut a piece of 5/8" MDF for the floor and dropped it in. It's not a tight fit because it still has to go through the trunk opening. Besides, the upholstery panels will cover any gaps.

I find that upholstery panels are useful for other stuff while they're sitting around - like checking the fan on my spray gun . . . or painting brackets.
With the floor in, I spent a lot of time cutting cardboard patterns and ended up with this - panels cut from 3/16" plywood.

I bought some vinyl from Hancock fabrics and some 1/2" foam, and used the panels to mark the foam. I cut it about 3/16 oversize so it would wrap around the edges of the panel.

Should work out great, Jack!!!! Now when it's done and you hunt down Kyle you can haul away his broken body in an upholstered trunk!!!!
This is the foam panel cut to shape. I glued it to the panel using a foam contact cement that Hancock had also. Hint: Get everything positioned. When it touches, it's stuck! Why did I write "GLUE" on it? Because I'm known to glue the wrong side.

After that, I overlaid the vinyl over the foam and stapled it in place from the back. I'm no Gabe, so I didn't really care how it looked on the back. Besides, this is the first time I've done this in years, and I was inventing as it went along.

The title is on record, insurance application went out yesterday FedEX, and I should be able to pick up plates on Friday. The interior isn't finished, but I'm driving it. Does that make it a ratrod? :rolleyes:

It took me about 10 minutes to get the plates this morning. A welcome change from the normal DMV hassle. There's a DMV office in the Virginia Beach City Hall which most people apparently don't know about. It's staffed by a nice-looking crew of ladies - none of whom have the normal DMV attitude.
I couldn't get the exact plate I had in Nebraska - and other places for almost 20 years, but I got close. Upload in a minute or two.

Great taste in color,stance,wheels,,,,but I'd be awful tempted to add a subtile though small orange/red (certain shade) flame(small) so to add a touch of contrast but not draw attention.
I've been thinking about some subtle graphics, but I need to get the upholstery done first. That happens this winter.
I drove it about 5-6 miles this evening, but didn't go out on the highway. I live only a couple of miles from a police station, and I don't have my state inspection yet. That comes Friday morning.
It runs straight and true - even hands off at 35-40 mph. It's running really, really fat, though. I need to get to tuning.
And . . . where the bleep do I put a front license plate? That big, square thing hoses up the whole look of the front end.
Sounds like you need something hydraulic to raise and lower the front plate at the appropriate times. That or move to PA. We don't use front plates.:LOL:

Jack,bout the only thing that would look right would be mount it underneath that nose,don't hide or cover the nose, Just a suggestion.
If I put it under the nose, it would scrape the paint off the highway centerline. Maybe I could make a buck plowing snow?
Yep, VA requires two plates - unless you have an antique that was only set up for one. Mine are standard plates.
I may be able to get by without one. The local cops are used to seeing only one on certain hot rods.

I would say leave off the front plate until you get stopped. then pull it out of the trunk and say your mounting bracket broke or some other excuse. if he gives you a fix it ticket figure a way to put the plate on and if not wait until the next time your stopped.
Jack, I agree with leaving it off. Unlikely a cop will cite you for it unless they are a real prick. Worse case it could be your "dragging" plate. Just wire tie (or bungie) it the front end and let it wave in the wind. If you go fast enough it won't hit the ground (air pressure will keep it aloft).:LOL:
Of course it will be a violation because it will be below the scrub line, but hell, we are all outlaws in the eyes of the DMV anyway.:LOL: :LOL:
I vote for leave it off. Not having the front plate on my daily driver got me out of a speeding ticket recently. Id rather pay the fix it ticket than a speeding ticket any day.
- First inspection - passed easily
- First trip of any distance - 30 mi
- First engine problem - poly-lock came loose, big clicking, big miss, heavy sweating until I got home. A few dents in the rocker. Easy fix.
- First performance improvement - Switch the vacuum advance from manifold to ported. Unbelievable difference.
- First tow home - Holley red fuel pump quit. I was about 3 miles from home, and the wife came and towed me about halfway back. When we got in the subdivision, the pump had cooled off, and it ran again . . . long enough to get in the garage. I think it's overheating and going on thermal shutdown. I'll pull it apart and see if there is any junk in it.
- First thumbs up . . . and second . . . and third . . .

I'm coming in on the tail end of this thread, but your bad '34 is making me rethink my options on a similar style '32. Great job, and an even better look from all of your pictures. And yes, I am right in your old backyard of SW OP - still putting in time at 114th & Lamar, atop the hill with B&V.
is it possible for you to suction cup the plate to your windshield?

My windshield is about 6" high. With the state inspection sticker, and the DoD ID stickers, I'd need radar if I put anything else near the windshield.

I am trying to look at the back posts and catch up on your progress. Thanks for the info on the Va registration. The home upholstery work looks very good, maybe I will try to upholster my rumble seat area myself, eventually. I am trying to shift gears back to the car and I guess I have at least two months of good temperatures left to get back to it. I appreciate your documentation of problems along the way.

A question on your grille - did you cant it back from stock a bit, and was that part of the problem getting the hood sides to fit? Your 'look' is perfect - just wondering about the shell to body relationship.

The grille shell is a specially designed 'glass unit with SS tubing installed. I didn't come up with the idea. It came that way. The problem wasn't with fitting hood sides. It was fitting the hood sides that Gibbon supplied with the car. They were junk - and had a horrible attachment method. After seeing the car with no hood sides, it just may stay that way.
BTW, I've invented a new word. Gibboned. I've been Gibboned again. I've noted this before, but when they narrowed the axles, they messed up the inside behind the bearings so a seal won't fit. Since the bearings are sealed, I tried HT silicone, but that started leaking. So, today, I pulled the axles. On Monday, I'm going to have a new set of bearings installed that I bought from Currie. They are sealed, and have an o-ring installed in the outer race. I figure (hope?) that will solve the problem.
Just another set of parts that Gibbon supplied that I had to throw away. I'm getting used to it, but hopefully, this is the last time I've been Gibboned.

I assume that the grille shell was also from Gibbon and came as part of their "kit" that they call their 'viper'? From your experience their QA/QC is non-existent. Are you aware of other sources for a similar grille?
