Good post Denny..... If the pics are correct, th pinion is a touch too deep. Only needs to be pulled back a little bit.
setting up gears is one of several things a person not expierenced in it should not tackle .. you dont undo damage .. just a warning ...
Yea, it looks like you have too much shim on the pinion.
Just know that removing shim on the pinion will change the back lash/carrier shim as well.
Congrats on trying it your self.
ya i thought i would try it myself the only really way to learn how to do is just to do it.
One thing I re-looked at on the difference of the two pics was the grease being used is not consistant. One trick to get a correct pattern from is not to use grease or prussian blue. It has been stated and shot down on this forum in previous posts. But, I will retell it. Spray liberally the contact surfaces of the two gears with brake cleaner, let dry. Get some aerosol foot spray powder from the store and evenly coat the area on the ring gear you want to check. It only takes seconds to dry. Run the pinion through it's pattern, both reverse and forward making sure there is drag on the load, simulating the effort it takes for the gears to move the car. It doesn't take much, just enough to wipe the dried powder off of the contact area from the effort. It leaves a perfect pattern and there is no room for mistakes when reading it.
