I've found an engine and tranny for my 51 chev truck and was wondering if a 10 bolt rear axle out of a '67 beaumont is any good?
I have a SBC that will be 383 and a t400 transmission for it, both pre 80's. Anything I should know??
Thanks,
Sean

Not familiar with that car specifically, but I would guess it is the Canadian equivalent of one of our US cars of that era. If so, it will be a fine street rear axle but won't take the abuse a 12 bolt would. As long as you drive it conservatively it will probably never give you any problems.
Even a 12 bolt or 9 inch Ford can be broken by an over heavy right foot. :D

I believe it's the equivilent of your chevelle. The guy only wants $100 for it. I might want to fit it on my '27 T and put the 12 bolt on the '51 Chev truck.
Got a SBC 4 bolt for $200 and a T350 for $100, so this would bring me to a total $400 for my complete drive train:LOL: . That leaves a lot of room for upgrades!!!

The Beaumont rear is the same as a Chevelle. It should be an 8.2" 10 bolt.
Set up right with an automatic trans it should be quite dependable for street use. If you plan to run "sticky" tires, go for good axles (Moser, etc).
Otherwise it should be plenty dependable.
The 10 bolt is stronger than you might think. I totally put one to the test in my 66 Nova all because someone I didn't like told me I had to put a 9" in it to race the car. Being a bull headed german like I am I just had to show him and there was no way I would remove it. I ran the origional 10 bolt for 14 full seasons of drag racing 300+ runs a year. I had several 400 small blocks tied to a powerglide with a 5000 stall so this 10 bolt was used & abused with killer traction and slicks. I did have Mark Williams axels and broke 2 posi's and installed a mini spool. Told ya I wasn't going to give up. That adds up to one posi replacement every five years. Mid way through season 14 I broke an axel at the splines where it meets the posi. The weak point for a 10 bolt is the thickness of the axel on the spline end plus less number of splines, doesn't matter if it is a stock or aftermarket axel.
I now have a 12 bolt in it.
As "Itoldyouso" said any rearend can be destroyed. It is all about how well the rear end is set up.
It's your choice...I personally wouldn't worry to much about a 10 bolt on the street.
It's been a long time since I've seen an 8.2 10 bolt. My suspicion is they've all blown up. Every 10 bolter I see or can pick up around here is a 8.5 ring gear. This would be something to tear into and see what you have.Quote:
