We all know we should use them but how often do you check the jack stand itself??? A member of ChevyTalk posted about what he found when he pulled the extension out by accident.

That will get your attention, thats for sure and for certain.

That just gives me the creeps. I use them plus 2 floor jacks every time I crawl under my car and I still have trouble laying under it not thinking about what could happen if something gave way.

WOW. thanks for the picture and the heads up. never thought to check them. I am like Larry. I always use 2 stands and my floor Jack when i am under my car.
I don't like jack stands, never have, they scare me. But I do have a pair of 6 ton ones that I use when desperate. Normally I use 12 ton ramps to get under the car.
I always use two stands and leave the jack after lowering it just enough onto the stands... beats a couple lengths of 4x4's we've seen on here before :) Ramps are good unless you need to take the wheels off...

Mine are about 20 years old...guess I'd better go check 'em today. Thanks for the heads up!

A little story about ramps. Not 12 ton ramps but the ones you buy a parts stores. A friend of mine was pulling his car up on a new pair of ramps he was near the top and he hit the brakes to slow down not wanting to go into the stops. When he hit the brakes the ramps colapsed as the front wheels locked up but the rear kept driving. Good heads up on the stands. Glad I finaly got a hoist, but there are maintanance isues there also. SAFETY DOSEN'T JUST HAPPEN
i all way s put more then 4 stands under a car if its up off the gound i all ways put two more under the rear end and the floor jack under the front cross over and 4 on the frame rails .i had a car come down on me i did not get hurt but it did changed my way of thinking for life
I've got the Spirit on 4 stands right now and was laying under it the other day while welding. Think I had better check things out and add my two other stands before I crawl back under.
Also, if you are worried what you have on stands may slide on the stand because steel on steel is very slippery just put some wood or cardboard or leather in between.:)
Hy jackstands are made from Ford V8 axle housrings. I don't worry.
Mine are newer, but I never trust just them alone, always keep the floor jack in place and wheels blocked! I'm always thinking this is no time for an earth quake! I don't know about the rest of you but mine like the meat between your thumb and your index finger, when you let them down!
Does anyone remember those crappy sheet metal stands that were made out of sheet metal and were like 2.99 each and used the pins??? I remember seeing a lot of those that folded up with a little bit of lateral pursuasion...All the current cars of the time were a lot heavier then as well...Now we have ratchet stands but so many are made in china.
Yep. My brother had a pair on screw adjustable metal alloy stands that were great for getting the exact height you wanded, just a bit slower going up or down, but they never bit me like my wratcheting ones do! Another reason why beer and cars don't mix well!:D
My greatest issue with jack stands is lateral movement of the floor jack. Always be aware that the floor jack is GOING to roll and have it positioned appropriately.
when I was younger, I would work with just the floor jack, never had a problem. then as I got older, I got more paranoid. started using cinder blocks with no problems.
Got more paranoid, started adding wood strips to insulate the blocks from busting.
Paranoia increased yet more, and I switched to cheapie jack stands.
More PARANOIA and I now use heavier jack stands. And I am VERY cautious with the floor jack any higher than 50%.
I think in a few years the paranoia will induce me to replace the Sears ATV jack with a 300$ 10 ton low profile unit.
2x Firebird.
I had a dragster chassis fall on me back in the old days while I was welding on it. It only weighed about 120 pounds but that really hurt.
My big dually crushed a pair of 3 ton China made stands. Luckily I was just repositioning the floor jack when they came down. I now have some 6 ton USA stands and still use the big floor jack and 4 x 4's front and back of each wheel on the ground. I'm still nervous.
Concrete blocks....had them pulverize twice with light weight cars on them.
Sheet metal stands....haha in the dumpster for recycling.
Plastic ramps.... not a chance.
cheap aluminum folding ramps for ATV's.... folded up the reverse way and bent the front end of a new Grizzly.
Be safe.
i use a set of 20 ton stands i got out of my old motorpool when i was in the army. they are kind of heavy, but i know a car will not crush them, and they are alot taller, even on the lowest setting, than a standard jack stand. i just have to use a smaller set at first, jack up to almost the tallest height, and then switch over to the big ones. it takes a little more time, but i will do it everytime!:3dSMILE:
