Electical Problem Need Help

I just installed a new engine in my little Model A. This is a small block Ford and C-4 Combo that has been in this car severeal times. I had replaced it with a Desoto Hemi but some guy offered me more for the Hemi than I could pass up, so back in the Ford went.

I made the swap on Sat. and drove the car most of the day Sunday with no problems at all. Today I went up to the welding supply store for a roll of wire and when I went to come home the car started up just fine but the starter would not stop running. I headed for the house with it running and made it about a half mile when it shut down. I am sure the battery went dead from the starter running. Pulled the starter and the starter drive was toast completly eaten up, the flywheel was good not a nick in it got lucky there I guess. I also replaced the Ford starter solonoid. Got everything hooked back up and the new starter and new solonoid are doing the same thing. They engage, turn the motor over, but will not disengage. I rigged up a second battery and bypassed the solonoid and the electric's on the car and went straight to the starter and it turned over and the car started with the switch on, but when I hook it up through the solonoid the starter keeps running.

What do I do next? Any help would be great.

Sounds to me like the start switch is hanging in the crank position, especially since it did just fine when you by-passed the switch. Replace the start switch.

Evolvo I did bypass the starter switch, and even the nuetral safety switch. And ran a jumper wire straight from the battery to the solonoid. With the ingnition switch on and then touched the jumper wire to the solonoid post that activates the starter. Starter did in fact engage and started turning the motor over. I then disconnected the jumper wire completly from the solonoid and the starter continued to run.
