Alright, got another question
How the heck does this thing werk?
I want to make a Waldon's style roof insert for my 30 sedan, but at $1800, I figured I'd buy a wheel and try to do it myself.
Metalmeet has been down for a while, and doesn't seem as though it will be back soon so I'm pounding the internet pavement looking for guidance.
here's what I got, a 28", 16 ga Baileigh English wheel
what I hope to make with it.Custom Powder Coating & Media Blasting

I'm going to do mine probably next month. I have a few other things to do first. I'm going to make mine in two pieces instead of one sheet. I think it will be a little easier to manage.

Like Jesse James said, "English wheels are great for making blood squirt out from under your fingernails!"

I know someone that used to werk at Walden's, and he says they are 2 pieces wheeled, welded, then hammered (darn, now I have to buy another tool), then re wheeled.
I'm not sure I can count on much more help than that from him however, so I'm approaching learning as if I'm on my own.
Don, not so much squirting as rapid drips, but I ain't done yet
agreed bead rollers are not always ones friend either
whats funny about our bead roller is my kids scrap more good material on that sucker that I'd care to admit since they were 8 or 9, never have gotten hurt. Man kids are super smart, and follow directions so well... adults however not so much all the timeCustom Powder Coating & Media Blasting

had not one thing to do with directionit was a 5 buy 3 foot pic of alum for the back of a dual turbo v6 850 hp+ BAD ASS liquid to air inter cooled Co2 air shifted liberty 5 speed buick grand national that was all VFN glass but the rear clip. can you say alot of work ... did all the tin and down tubes. custom glass and body and paint work had over 24+ hours in just the custom hood with no paint the car was black and we black out the side quarter glass. as the drive had some ..set back .. so i made up the alum side panels and ran some bead work in to them . so if you can hand crank and run a 5 by 3 alum all by your self ?like i did
i love to watch
i did both of them by my self .i did catch my hand in it . as for hot steel in the ears i have had that happen to many times . when i welded rockers on at the body shop some times they bit back .the last time took along time to get my one ear to work good .i must of been low on ear wax that day .smelled like someone was cooking pork

Looks like you have a good selection of rollers. Try a few different ones to get the radius you want, have some help on the other end of the sheet, then just start practicing!!!! Then, you'll have to have a planishing hammer, too!!!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

yep i have big throat bead roller sits under my welding table . i like to take it out time to time to take nice pic of sheet metal that you work on all day then turns it to trash in seconds flat . when your old friend likes the speed up when your working a bend as you are holding and steering the panle tru the rollers . so you get bend out of shape... kicking him off driving job.. then your steer and run the panle tru your self along with that skin web part your hand that hook to you r thumb thru the drive gears . Bead roller . look it up in the dictionary 1 a tool used to turn sheet metal to trash .2 a mid evil tool used time to time to kill a old freinds . 3 a mid evli device used to get anyone to say any thing as there skin gets runned thru the gearsLast edited by pat mccarthy; 02-17-2010 at 11:37 PM.

Government should try those instead of waterboarding

Sitting here with two broken fingers that thing makes me cringe looking at it.But $1800 is a lot of cola - IMO. What would the panel cost to have done for you? (aside from completely stripping you of the 'wow I did it myself feeling')

I called Marcel, the guy who made a lot if Boyd's bodies, they want $3,000 to make and install. Without looking at it, it could be less after he sees it. I'm going over there next week just to see what it would be.
