VDO Electronic Speedo not working.

Hi, my Chrysler rod has a speedo issue.

I think this may me a electical issue., You may have seen my previous post in the newbie forum, after yrs of playing with muscle cars and classic cars, my wife and i decided to get a street rod. Its a 41 Chrysler Business Coupe with a 37 Chevy nose on it. It has Chevy running gear and electrics too, 350/350 10 bolt.

I have tried to contact the original owner to see what he used for the build but cant find him, the shop that built the car (2003) cant find the records either.

Anyway, it has a VDO Gauge set, it looks like they may have come all together, they are white faced retro looking gauges, Volts, Temp, Oil, Speedo, and Fuel.

The Speedo has a needle that goes to 120mph and has a LCD odometer. It does nothing, either when driving or turning the key etc.

Not sure how these work or where it gets its info from, can someone point me in the right place? I assume there is a control unit somewhere either on a axle or in the distributer that caculates something.

There is a Hall effect sender on the transmission that goes where the cable was. There is a small stub cable inside that may have slipped off center and is not driving. Or call VDO

And the answer to the question, "why isnt my speedo working"?, is... because it was never hooked up.

Something tells me that the guy that had this built never really finished it, or got to drive it. The guys i got it from said he got sick and had to sell it. I was under it looking around yesterday.

Speedo not hooked up, brakes are brand new, or hardly used after they were replaced, the paint on the calipers and drums is still pretty new and not baked by heat, the transmission fluid is really low, but there are no leaks, like someone installed it and didnt really get around to filling it all the way, the grease zirks are bone dry like they never got around to greasing it, the alternator bearing was shot like it sat with pressure on it in one spot for a long time.

I gotta check the oil in the rear end to see what it looks like, no strange noises though.

Wish i could find out more about the car.

We're having trouble calibrating the speedometer in Dan's rpu too. We have read the directions 10 times and done exactly what they say, but it still reads 30 mph or more off. I just got off the phone with Stewart Warner Tech and they are going to speak to engineering and call me back.

Don has the same problem with the electronic speedo in his T, he has tried to get it calibrated for 3 years now and still no good. That is why I either don't put one in my car at all, or leave it disconnected, like in my 27. I go by tach readings or just go slower than the rest of the cars around me. :D

I have a gps in mine for a speedometer,you can set it in MPH or Km's, works excellent, has trip meter/odometer,never let me down and is accurate.,Brian
