Fabrication section?

I think a forum can get to the point of so many sub sections that it is hard to follow along on a build.I do not chase a O/P on a build on multi threads.The forums that deal with metal fab's have been ref'ed a number of times here.Many of the threads are a "how to" just by the nature of the builds that are done here on older rods.So my two cents is that would mean a sub section for metal fab would end up being projects not having much to do with the older rods and topics that as I said we have left ref's for sites better suited for threads like that.If anyone wants to invite Dutch Comstock to this site,I think that would be a asset.

I am not a stuctured person and operate much better without specific threads for specific items. Having said that, i can see a benefit if there were a 'how to' tech thread as opposed to a fabrication or a build thread. That type of thread could have documeted tech pieces from building a stromberg 97 to butt welding sheetmetal panels or making frame rails and suspension design. Let it become a referance source or a library, maybe we could get some old geezers like Jerry or curmudgeons like Pat to part with some of thier hardwon knowledge and donate an article or two!

Going to chime in again.Thing is the search functions provide info on topics asked and answer in threads posted by the O/P.At that point that the experienced members add info for the benefit of all members current or to join the site in the future........I sure would hate to think all that hard work for a archive is wasted because people don't ref that info.God for bid something was to happen to our older members(yep me included) and the knowledge was lost forever because people didn't do a search for it in the posted threads.I also think to ask members to create a section of knowledge for the sole sake of a teaching mode when it is there in the threads is a imposition on those members.My point is to post those helping answers at times takes some work already.

I think the basic working knowledge of how a forum works allows for new members and current ones to use a search first and then if some clarification is needed post a question saying this is what I have found so far.Honestly,I am as guilty as the next person not doing that first.But on the back of my mind I know that is truly one way of showing respect to the history of the site and the members who's hard work have contributed so much to the site.

My two cents worth is you can only cover so many topics effectively and then it starts to come apart because of build question being too scatter in too many threads not connecting to each other.That it is far,far,better to have a continuous build thread covering each question one step at a time in one thread.That the kind of work done here more than covers topics all kinds of fab work in the build threads.

Gezzzzzzzz-I learned somthin.Jerry is 70 yrs old.Didn't know that.Or did I read that one wrong again??.Almost seems I met him yrs ago but I can't place it.Maybe at Norwalk or London.Hummmm???.

Great idea. we all need some info on fabrication some time or another.

There was some politics happening between Metalmeet.com and Allmetalshaping.com in a board war.If you read pass the first sections of that,you find threads with very talented fabricators.One stand out is Dutch Comstock.

What I see is .....you are building a hot rod/ truck/ muscle car......so you are fabricating!!
Fabrication covers everything you are doing.

Heck Jerry Clayton; I thought I was the only one that got pissed and thought I had wasted my time when I had gone in to fine detail on how to do something.
Then they turn right around and do exactly what I had said not to do. Like the time I was doing a cam on a freinds 318.
We had the intake off and the front of the motor off all ready to pull the cam and I had to take a restroom break.
I told my buddy don't touch anything I'll be right back, I come back and he is standing there with the cam shaft in his hand.
Guess where all the lifters were!!!! RRRRRRR After another hour of trying to fish the lifter out of the oil pan we were ready to start installing the new cam and lifters.

I'm going with Sunsetdart on this. Been on forums (briefly) with everything so neatly sectionalized---then you end up with a bunch of voluntary "forum cops" who's main reply's are that "this should be in that forum" and a legitimate post just gets swallowed up with posters trying to decide where the post really belongs---and the OP's questions or concerns go unanswered! The new build forum works great to follow someone's progress and ask questions about their methods or materials used. Most everything on the site concerns fabricating of one sort or another.

Not long ago someone demanded a new forum just for upholstery and how to do it...we get some very nice pictures and good advice on their from a couple of the pro shops but little else. My concern with a fabrication forum is that it would detract from the build threads and scatter the information all over the site and make the individual builds harder to follow. Using either the search function, or asking if someone rembers a particular fabrication that was posted here in the past will usually yield all the fab information anyone could want.

Spikeo, I think you're on to something. There are a lot of skills involved with a build, and many of them would fall under the heading of Fabrication. I can see some step-by-step posts where someone documents every step of a process, and explains the challenges they faced and how they overcame them. Possibly a "training post" on shrinking metal, or TIG welding, or on creating a replica part when the original is no longer available. Someone has a question about different "consumer grade" welders...get some feedback from users of them. Curious about an english wheel? Check out the thread that details a simple project with one. This section could be quite informative, and a place to post questions when something isn't working out like it is supposed to...someone with experience can lend some advice. You've got my vote!

Well,I look at all thesections in this forum now,,and think,that is enough..Its a well structured board,and do we really need another section??I enjoy the fabrication that goes on in hot rod talk,build threads,shop talk,,etc,,and the banter in the middle..Keep it as it is..and yes,,I had a feeling Jerry Clayton was an ''older'' member,what with his drag racing exploits,and other claims to fame,,;)couldnt be much younger..:cool::cool:

The problem with having too many sub forums is that it makes it harder to administrate.
Besides, where would it stop?
A sub forum for metal fabrication
A sub forum for plastic fabrication
A sub forum for carbon fiber fabrication
A sub forum for fiberglass fabrication
A sub forum for aluminum fabrication
A sub forum for boran steel fabrication
A sub forum for carbon steel fabrication

And so on and so forth..........

As for having snobby people saying "you posted in the wrong forum", most certainly not here.

Just my two cents worth (as they guy who most of the time moves the posts posted in the wrong forums to the proper ones and nobody ever notices :D ).
