Unless you in an area with mud/snow where traction can be iffy or are Drag racing where traction is also an important issue a Posi is pretty much just braggin’ rights. On most regularly driven street cars the Posi is really only exercised far less than 1% of the time.
I’m not saying bragging rights are a bad thing……. lets face it would you admit your mondo motor 4 Speed Hot Rod has a peg leg rear end or worse prove it by leaving just one black tire mark.
That being said 3 of the 5 cars I currently have registered and insured have Posi’s in them (the other 2 are the wife’s cars ;):3dSMILE: )
We ran top fuel in the 60/70 with open rear end
Here's an alternative that has worked for some of us, even in drag racing.
A front-motor, rear-drive car twists the frame diagonally on acceleration. The left front and right rear get light, while the right front and left rear get heavy. That's why you always wear out the RR tire first.
If you have large coil springs in the rear, install an air bag on the RR only.
If you have coilovers or leafs, install an air shock on the RR only. Move the battery to the EXTREME right rear of the car.
Air up the unit, increasing pressure a little at a time until you get two black stripes. An open diff drives easier than a locker.
if you need traction ( which in high performance applications you would ) then go posi .. if you dont ( in normal cruise conditions ) then go one legged
Open is probably the right answer for most cruisers, and is definitely the economical approach. I elected a Detroit TruTrac, which is a step above positraction in my opinion, having no clutch pack to wear out and requiring no friction modifiers. It's a bullet proof locker that is very street friendly.
I like posi or a locker. But it probably just a macho thing. I bought a locker for my half rat truck over a year ago. It's still sitting on the shelf. I can't decide if I want to wear one tire out at a time or both evenly..............:3dSMILE:
