I would like to put a set of 14" wheels on my 1940 ford drums on the front of my ride.. It currently has 15" wheels on it, and it looks like there might not be enough room between the inside diameter of the rim (next to the tire bead) and the outside diameter of the drum. Has anyone done this? will a 14" stock production wheel fit?
I put some 14" rims off a 58 or 59 Imperial on my 41 ford once. problem there is that those wheels are pretty hard to find.
If you've still got the 5 1/2" bolt circle I don't think you're going to find any production wheels in 14". As for any 14" fitting, I think you'd have to use a wheel with a rim width below 5", maybe even need some positive offset. You'd have to check with someone like Wheel Vintiques to see if they can make these for you with the correct bolt pattern and diameter.
Hey Brianrupnow.....I went back in my head and remembered the rims were on a 1957 Imperial I had. they were 14" with a 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern. I believe they were 6" width, but it's been quite awhile so I'm not positive. The 58 and 59 Imperials I had both had 15" wheels. You should have seen the car the time I put a set of model A wheels on for laughs. I don't think that 5700 lb beast would have cornered too well.
Wherre are you located as a local junkyard might have a late 50s imperial but there probably sunk to the frame and the rims might be questionable.
Thanks guys---the question is hypothetical at this point. I'm running a boxed model A frame with stock crossmember, a reversed eye spring, and a 4" dropped Superbell I-beam, and will be running full 1928 A fenders. This is on a roadster pickup I have purchased, which I have never seen with fenders or an engine in it yet----construction will be starting in about 3 weeks. I am located about 75 miles north of Toronto in Ontario Canada, and we have a foot of snow here yet. I really like a model A when the front tire fits tight into the front fender radius, but untill I get things together, I'm just building in my head. I have built other rods with a different front spindle which allowed me to run 15" wheels on the rear and 14" on the front, but they were fenderless cars, so I have no real field of comparison.
