But my real question is this. I now need to use my '69 Elky as my primary transportation (since I have no other alternates) which is OK, except for one problem.

My tail lights don't work.

Brake lights do, turn signals do, but the tail lights? No way. This was a total rebuild, 69 el camino, 350, R7004, new Painless (hardly) wiring, but the tail lights don't work.

I have replaced the dimmer and the switch, no joy. When I bench test the switch, I don't get any juice on the tail light tang...

One fellow that I spoke with suggested replacing the dimmer again, said that he remembered something about how those two work together (tail lights and dimmer?).

Any ideas about testing/fixing/making it work?

tail light lead runs from switch to tail lights. stop lights run through turn signal .call painless ext 1004 . mike will get you going.

I realy don't see what the dimmer would have to do with the tail lights????? Maybe the headlight sw.??

I agree Charlie, that is why I mentioned it to see if it would float or not...I think it is a titanic idea.

I believe of you have front park lights and side marker lights your switch is probably good. If not then I would look at the switch.

Stupid question....have you actually pulled the taillight bulbs and verified they are bad and that you don't have power going to the taillights?

I spent a whole afternoon tracking down a backup light problem on time only to find out I had 2 burned out bulbs......I kind of learned from that one.

OK here is the final deal.

Checked the light bulbs, ok.

Checked the switches (3 new) and none of them had power out on the tail light connection point (tang).

Put separate power to tail lights, they work!

Tried original switch, but it was broken in side.

Used my "rube goldberg" approach and got tail lights running, when headlights are on.

Wierd about how three new switches all had the same problem?
