Has anyone looked into electric power steering for their cars? I see some universal units out there. One is even made to work with an ididit column. More and more cars are going to electric units and it seems like it would make for an easier conversion if you already had manual, not to mention that it preserves HP.
See this month's Street Rodder magazine....has an article on electric boost on an Ididit column. They are a bit pricey but get rid of that ugly hydraulic pump.
I just installed one in a midget race car about 3 months ago . It is a universal unit for cars up to 3000 lbs.
It goes right in the steering column . Must be mounted securely , weighs about 9 lbs . About 8" long , Has a small control box
Uses a 30 Amp fuse , has a indicator light , wired to the ignition switch goes off after 5 sec . Very easy installation .
Worked perfect right from the start . The cost ,about $1200 , U-joints are included .

Considering the cost and effort it would take to convert manual to power, that's not bad.
Power rack, hoses, pump, pump mount brackets, pulleys, etc.
The unit that Flaming River sells is listed at $5950 on their web page......a touch more than $1200. Seems to be a disconnect here.

Maybe Flaming River isnt selling many since they are $5000 higher?
That unit that EPS looks like a good deal $995 with U-joints and short shafts . The Ididit looks like some kind of
column is included . It's worth a phone call to clarify just what there selling !
I know all the new 21st century stuff is cool but my take on anything like steering or the throttle is ...I want to be the one to have control, not some electric solenoid or a fuse.
Not knocking the stuff, just saying for the cost and relying on fuses to make sure you can steer is not what I want to do.

Hell, I can't keep the tail lights working on my rides! Trust my life to wires and fuses? I think not!
One little mouse does some gnawing and all of a sudden you crank her right and go left! Some fun!
I also found by reading and article on this subject that some of the electric steering have weight limits. Read one article saying that this one they were installing is fine for a vehicle up to 2800 lbs.
So I guess you have to also be aware of which one you do get and if will handle the weight of your car.
Still.......not me!!
