ANY overly loud exhaust on a prolonged trip,(like your going to a show out of town)the physical aspect is it will tire you out faster.And mufflers placed towards the rear has a less noise effect inside the car.The burn factor is like owning a dog that bites people.It's property.Therefor you are liable.:eek::whacked:

Yep, and I've said that every time I pull into a place where people are going to be looking at the car, or especially any time that there are small kids around I'm like a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs, worrying that someone's going to get burned and that I'm going to feel somewhat responsible, even if they should know better. Even with all that "caution" it's just a matter time before someone cooks a leg, or worse. I think what bothered me most about your "...I'll be extree careful" statement is that it seemed (to me) to be quite arrogant, as if you're above caring what happens to anyone else. That may not be the case, and regardless I'll avoid any further comment on your thread from this point forward. You'll do what you want to do, as you should - it's your car. I believe that all of the collective comments about the inherent dangers were offered to ensure that you were considering the negatives before removing a perfectly good exhaust system that you paid good money for.Quote:

I liked Your post Rodger and when I said I'll be extra careful,I didn't mean it as joke,,I of course "do" care about the safety of myself and others,so if and when I do add the pipes,,,I do plan on reminding myself and others,{passengers and outsiders} of the heat issue to the point that I am seriously thinking of putting a sign on My dashboard "reminding" me to "exit carefully"!

Had a 66 vet BB with side pipes, I have had side pipes on this car 10 years plus, no burns. It's a 34 that means suicide doors. If you place your leg against the door jam getting in and out, or are short I guess you could get burned. I have burned my forearms on the header part, timing, changing plugs, never a leg on the side pipes. That bad32 with side pipes will be Killer32.
I have zero problem with Lake pipes. But for a fact they are much higher on the side of the car and if there were an exhaust configuration to be cautious of that is it. Side pipes at least are low and out of the way.

If you want side pipes, so be it. But I would store the exhaust parts you will be removing. You may want to go back to them some day.
I say go for it if that was what I wanted that's what I would do. the way I see it IF their HOT it want take them long to learn that hurt's so don't be touching my stuff.

Age is certainly no guarantee of wisdom!!!! Experience is always the best teacher. I know some younger types that have done all kinds of go fast and Hot Rod type adventures, and some older types who have never done anything themselves, but think because of their age they must be smart..... I'll take the experience anyday!!!!!

I guess you have been beaten up pretty good on the safety issue, probably enough said on that, except perhaps that sometimes extra careful still isn't enough.

On the ol lady's diplomat with the 318 huffing through 72" sidepipes, they didn't seem restrictive, and weren't overly loud. Nice rumble at idle.
That car is long gone, concrete embankments are unforgiving. I kept the pipes though, and have one on my 76 nova with straight six, and it is very quiet.
I try to take a positive outlook on things like sidepipes, I tend to think that the majority of people are smarter then the sidepipes and know that they are part of the exhaust and as such are hot and can cause burns!!!! Heck, so can a hot tailpipe!
As for kids burning themselves on them, lets place the responsibility where it really lies----Where the heck are these kids parents and why are they letting them run around loose and messing with other people's cars anyway??? Yeah, it's a shame if they get burned on them but IMO it's certainly not the guy's fault who owns the sidepipes!!!!! I've had a number of roadsters, cars, coupes, and cruizer's with sidepipes or lake pipes, along with a number of Harley's with drag pipes and been burnt/seen others get burnt by them. I'll more then likely run them again, too. I like the looks and like the sound, plus on some of my really low to the ground creations it clears up a ground clearance issue!!!!
I don't think we should have to build our cars so that they are idiot proof, not sure it could be done anyway! If the sidepipes are in a place where they are a risk for a leg burn every time I get out of the car I usually run a stainless heat shield over them, the laser cut shop here in town can cut some really nice designs or even script writing into them!
Common sense just isn't really all that common anymore, is it?

i have been reading this with interest because i have been toying with the idea of them for my 27.
i am not too thrilled with the burned leg factor.
but my biggest concern is i really like how quiet my car is with the thrush glasspacks.
i dont like the look at me and how loud my car is thing.
i figure any attention that i get now is positive and i want to keep it that way.
We had a tri-power 427 Vett with side pipes.The heat shields used to raddle loose all the time and to have to step over them was kind of a pita.Haus Schmitt had 427 a AC Cobra with them too that got me acouple of times.
Dave-we both know what parents "should do". But don't!!.I totally agree it's their fault.Thing is with today's courts and sue happy people the tide has turned against what is considered a avoidable risk to the public.That is one of the corner stones why the car owner is held responsible.

I have never heard of a court case awarding anyone a dime for getting burnt on a sidepipe, just a lot of "once upon a time" stories.... Anybody can sue anybody for anything, winning the case is another thing. If I only did things that left me completely free from anyone possibly suing me for something I'd more then likely just spend the day in the house, and I'm not about to do that.
Like Johnboy, I tend to bellow when little kids are allowed to get to close to something hot like a sidepipe. If it's an adult, let them touch it. I'll bill them for continuing their education!!!!! I refuse to live my life with my actions dictated by how the "lowest common denominator" might react to how I do things.....

Well,,just dropped the Ride off at the local Hot Rod shop to install the new headers and 36" side pipes,,,,I'll post pics of the finished job in a day or two,,,,oh,,,and pics of My burnt leg as well!!!

Wow! Sorry I hit a nerve! No offense was intended in any way. It simply seemed to me that swapping out pipes was a pretty easy task, compared to the brake work, which you mentioned that you had done earlier. Having a shop with a lift makes a HUGE difference in either job, and is explanation enough! Added to that, having a buddy that has the shop, tools and experience is a GREAT way to do the work - learning by experience cannot be beat, especially with a mentor.Quote:
