I didn't get a chance to review whats there but there are some pics during construction of a set set I built for a 32 that I built for a customer--stainless, nascar type merge collectors and stainless Cobra type side pipes
I sold this car in 2000, but here are the side pipes I built for it. The photo was taken before I sent everything off to be Jet-Hot coated. My headers were from Sanderson and they will build a header extension to any length you want. I put a regular glass pack inside the collector rather than use one of their inserts so I could cut down on the noise level somewhat.
My recent thread http://www.clubhotrod.com/hot-rod-ta...imonial-2.html shows the lakes style headers that I built, and there's a shot of rumrumm's (Lynn's) previous roadster there, too. There're a bunch of pictures of the American Grafitti style on project thx138's threads - http://www.clubhotrod.com/deuce-den/...tml?highlight= Did you try the search feature?
One thing I want to warn you about regarding side pipes: never wear shorts, always wear jeans when you drive it. Because sooner or later you are going to burn you leg on the side pipe.
Attachment 53870Attachment 53871Attachment 53872Mine aren't really side pipes as they have caps, so I guess they are actually "lakes pipes". They run from the headers under the frame at a slight angle towards the back.
My exhaust is all stainless but I don't like the looks of stainless after it heats up so I had it media blasted and painted with Eastwoods hi-temp black and it has held up well.
Mick
That looks really good, Mick. Nice choice of color on the pipe.
This isn't a "street rod", but has side pipes. Both used to function, but currently only the RH side does.

I covered mine with perforated stainless, but that doesn't show up very well in this photo upon first glance.
Russ
That is a damn nice Bucket Russ and I certainly like the two pipes each side from the normal four into one that most T's have.
Side pipes ? You bet great look and sound, his and hers. What kind of car are you looking to hang them on?
This is what I'm gone hang 'em on.
Yes, it needs them, you will never regret that decision. Should really make that hotrod come alive. BTW rear tires were a good choice.
Do it, she's screaming for some throaty 50" pipes with chrome shields!
With that huffer a nice set of zoomies could be the real deal.
Just my humble opinion, a big noway to zoomies, but instead of side pipes why not look at either Limefires or Jaysters with the pipes still going down under the car through mufflers so that you can still enjoy the lower rumble of the exhaust note or remove the caps and go for that " Don't mess with me " exhaust level.Attachment 54011Attachment 54012
Thanks Pepi,,,,,
George, I'll give you six months with side pipes, or two weeks with a set of zoomies before you're paying somebody to pull them off and put the block huggers and flowmasters back on your coupe. I take you as a guy who likes his comfort and quiet (like a beemer DD for the freeway), and it won't take long for you to tire of the aggressive notes of side exhausts, especially zoomies. Do yourself a favor and drive it like it is, and finagle rides from some guys with side pipes to be sure you can stand the noise before you pay good money for changes.
I absolutely agree with rspears. Side pipes may not be so bad but zoomies would drive me nuts after awhile, plus they would probably be a real police magnet. Zoomies on a street rod look to me like somebody trying too hard to look cool.
The beauty of lakes plugs is you can cruise quietly and uncap them when you want hear noise.
Mick
I sort of agree with Roger and Mick. I've never had any side pipes myself, but in days of yore, we had a '64 Corvette, and were members of a large Corvette club in the Los Angeles area. One of our compatriots had a '64 coupe with a 365 horse 327 that he put a set of side pipes from a buds '65 396 onto. It sounded great coming and going, for a long time and along way off; that lopey cammed 327 had rumbles in it that never came out through the regular exhaust, and you could hear him coming for several blocks, even in the city. However, riding in that car was something else. Depending on whether one was accelerating, hard or easy, decelerating, or just cruising at some degree of part throttle, it had different tones and notes, all of them LOUD. You could feel the bass rumble in the seat of your pants, and after 30 or so miles, when you got out of the car, your butt would be tingling. It was like riding around inside a set of drums being played by a really good jazz drummer. And it tended to wear one out after a while.
Just a little war story from an old reprobate.
I'll take you up on that,,I "love" loud sounding cars.
I just sold My 2006 supercharged vette that had Random tech hi flow cats with B&B bullet exhaust which was louder than hell,,,I liked it,but the Wife didn't!
ps,,,my DD is a Chevy truck with a spin-tek muffler,,it sets off car alarms all the time!!!
My wife has a collection of decorative ceramic plaques, one of which says, "If Mama Ain't Happy, Ain't Nobody Happy", which seems somewhat appropriate here .
As far as wanting/having a car that "...sets off car alarms all the time" I'll leave that one alone. You wouldn't like my comment ;).
I agree wholeheartedly with Roger. You have an awesome car--drive it like it is. The reason I say that is you now have a full-flowing exhaust system. No matter what kind of side pipes you use, your exhaust will be restricted compared to what you have now. And with a blower, you need as much exhaust flow as possible. I would not be a bit surprised if you lost over 50 hp with side pipes.
Thank you Lynn as that is something that guys don't think of, how will altering the exhaust affect the engine's performance. Looks are important but when one has a few dollars invested in a engine and it has been built by a expert, they would of taken into account what diameter of the primaries, length of primaries and into what size collector. Even the exhaust diameter to the rear of the car and whether it is straight or has curves it can affect the HP and performance of the engine. I remember reading an article years ago on a F1 engine that the engine builders were have trouble with and in the end all they had to do to solve the problem was to add 11 " to the exhaust length. So, yes looks are important on your hot rod but so is performance.
They are Speedway fender well headers. I cut the collector off, welded on a collector, then modified a 90 to get the angle.

This shot shows the old collector that was cut off and the new one that was installed

With your suicide doors causing driver and pax to exit car toward front--the headers need to turn down sooner and tuck in toward the lower frame rail tighter to lessen the odds/chance of leg burn--its hard to get out of the seat and stand up next to the car without touching the back of your calf--
Look at the pipes and building process on the 32 five window in my gallery---stainless and I used a Nascar type merge collector and Cobra type muffler -----
Have you seen the the inside of the muffler blanks that are used in side pipes? They are restrictive and create a lot of turbulence. Magnaflows and Dynamax Ultraflows (which I run) flow much more efficiently. Check out this link:
glasspack vs. dynomax - NastyZ28.com
Here is a better photo.
I read the whole link and nothing was said about glass packs being more restrictive than other mufflers.
This is not my first muscle car{or Hot Rod},,,,I think I know what is best for my rides performance but thanks for the advice,,I am going to install them and see how it runs,,if I don't like them,,off they go and the stock pipes go back on!!!

The point of burned ankles is dead on.
I put 72" sidepipes on the late wife's Diplomat, and several of the nieces and nephews have scarred ankles.
Eventually we got smart, and escorted kids from the back seat if the pipes were warm.
As for our adult family, most of their ankles are already scarred from motorcycle exhaust, so the just got a reminder.
Ok,,,How's about I just be extree careful when existing the vehicle....
We've got lakes on the Cobra.
I parked it one day, started to walk away, and heard a noise behind me.
Turned around, and...some idjit with the all brains of a squashed louse had walked right up to it to look into the cockpit.
Why?
I don't know.
But his nylon trousers had melted into his ankles...and he seemed to think it was my fault.
"If you're too dumb to work out that the exhaust on a car that has just pulled up is going to be HOT; you're surely too dumb to breed."
And kept on going.
I don't think I made a new friend that day.
.
Lol, I had completely forgotten about stupidity factor!
I was certain I was going to get sued one day:
People would actually walk up to the car and put their hands on the outlets to see if they were 'real'! They'd have a 'real' blister to satisfy their curiousity.
We had a Superformance cobra for 9 years, and both my daughter and niece had been "Snake Bit" as we called it :) I had a 69 Ranchero with side pipes and we had the shields on them, and I think that helped us from being burned.
