Ok, this is a weird one but it has happen many of times and you really don't know why. The sender on transmission supplied by the speedo company is the problem . It looks good and works except there is one problem, The square cable is not suppose to come out of the unit (sender) as it will slid into the gear on the transmission and will disconnect from the sender .
Contact the company and see if they will replace it. If not, then I would try using some strong adhesive to keep it in the sender.
Jeff, is there room to slide a small speed nut (the type used to hold emblems on fenders, etc) over the square cable to hold it in place, should work better than an o-ring.

you could put a brass weld on it then file it down to what you want.
I replace the sender with a new one. The problem is they were made wrong. I tried a clip on it also and it moved and the cable came off in 5000 miles Just given a heads up for future problems !
