One + One= One?

So Mr. customer brought me a pretty straight 4 door Cheby and a Delivery Sedan Body of the same vintage. My job is to combine both to make one running sedan delivery. This gets very complicated and the Dictaphone is broken so I think this thread is going to be more of a pictorial thread. LOL Today was study and mark day. As well as door,fender, and wheel removal. Tomorrow morning is slice and dice time.

This sounds interesting to me! I'm guessing the panel is really rusty and the fordor is rust free and you're taking the good from the fordor to fix the panel?

Yep... Thats about it in the nutshell. Actually Im cutting off the four door and replacing it with what is good on the delivery. Make since?

Should be an interesting project, but then I have a fondness towards 40 Chevy 4drs.
I had 4drs when they were the bastard children, but I loved them.
Had one good runner w/3 cars to pick parts from.
Even though it was a work in progress the wife & I were still smiling ear to ear when we had this picture taken after doing a couple of laps on the Indy 500 Track back in 92..

Years ago I sold the rear quarters w/the windows off of one of my cars to a guy who told me they fit the coupes.
Just thought I'd let you know if you didn't already know this. No reason to waste good sheetmetal....joe

Thanks guys... Love the pic with the Indy cars and I'm fond of four doors as well. All the sheet metal that came in will be going back out with them, Just in different shapes. LOL It really is amazing how fast this stuff goes as long as you spend some time to think it through a few times before actually doing it. Thank God for the lift... That saves my back and hours by not having to find help to remove the bodies. If I can keep the visitors out it should be a fairly quick turn around. We will see?

I spent a few minutes earlier adding some braces to the Delivery body to insure it will be as close as possible when I go to put this puzzle back together. Im leaving every cut I make about a 1/4 inch long with the exception of the a Pillar so that I can do the final adjusting cut with the body in its final resting place. The wheel wells on the delivery are in rough shape so I will be using the wheel well on the 4 door and peeling the body away from that. And just like Nascar...

I used the 4" cutting wheel for the wheel wells, Plasma cutters for the interior, and the sawsall on the A pillars. Final trim will be done after the delivery body is free from its floor and sitting in place.

Your a magician, a little nip and tuck with a sawzall and ya got a roadster K00L

OOPs... Oh, I mean Wallah! A little time on the English wheel, shrinker, stretcher, and this is what I came up with :cool: Could you imagine the coin I could be cranking in if I could pull that off? Id have 4 door Chevys lined up around the block! :LOL: Photobucket is killing me! Guess I better leave that up being you guys caught me poking the wrong buttons. That was the first half of last weeks project. I built the roll bar, dash, and installed the gages, finished off the floor and a boat load of other finishing touches, but that is for another day...

It's... It's... It's..... it's Magic! Hah. 8-)

Sometimes I feel like such a door knob! Oh well, I will pay more attention in the future I promise. Actually taking off some of Saturday and I just might take off tomorrow too. What a renegade! LOL

Bob are the front doors or the 4dr the same as the doors on the delivery? If so, that makes this whole thing look fairly simple....on paper, at least!! Very clever way to do the swap and to have that lift would be awesome!! Nice work! I'm now signed up for the next installment....:3dSMILE:

My first guess is yes but im not an expert or S10's or 40 Dodges.... to me its the challenge of making it fit. Do some wheel base measurements and go for it!

First thing I did was change the passanger door before I got busy. Exact same size even though the body belt lines are very different. I can do the switcharoo cut and paste thing and make that look normal. Here is todays undertakings...

A late night tonight... My son was using the shop to build some new rear tube fenders for his Jeep so I hung around and helped him. I set the delivery body on the old 4 door floor tonight to get it out of the way. Tomorrow I will do some final trimming and hopefully by tomorrow afternoon start welding it back together... :eek:

Actually the slow part starts now... trimming everything up, fitting and re fitting, and finally tacking everything back up and slowly welding all this stuff together. Then the dreaded job of grinding making all the welds smooth.... It will take a good part of this week for sure. Thanks for the replys and interest. We are alswys doing something unique here and I guess that is what keeps it challenging and fun for us. I thought you might like to see a typical day at Bengels and the kind of stuff that goes on here along side of the seat building business. I will post up some more pics as I finish this thing up for Mr. Customer.

Ya know it took me the longest time to figure out what your were talking about as we have had nothing but beautiful weather for the past several weeks. Then I realized its not like this everywhere... In the late evening we are close enough to the coast line that the evening marine layer moves in. Its basically thick fog that doesn't quite get down on the ground. Every morning this time of year it takes until about 10:AM for the sun to burn it off. The closer you get to the beach the longer it takes to burn off and sometimes it doesn't. But where we are It typically burns off by 9:30 or so leaving us with perfect So Cal Weather. It gets thicker in April, May, And then in the June Gloom hits and the beaches are often covered in grey all day. It insulates the warmth in so its never excessively cold! Shorts and flip flop weather year round.

You've just described a typical day a few miles north of you as well. Didn't realize you were so close by. :)

Just down the street from you guys. :D What time does it burn off where your at? You learn to appreciate these kind of days if you surf... You can actually find parking spots! :LOL:

I've seen the fog so thick that you could barely see your hand in front of your face. I had to take a bus to LA because of fog at Lindbergh Field after boot camp in Dec of 61.

Oh you just made one of the last fog days here... in 62 they out lawed fog in So Cal as it wasn't earth friendly. By doing so It made the roads and air travel safer... Now some 50 years later the environmentalists want to allow it again as it reflects the sun and decreases global warming... But seriously right along the coast line it gets really thick at times. It can run inland thought some of the valleys as well and play havoc with the traffic. This will teach me to open my mouth. Its 12:00 noon and no sun today as of yet? Go Figure!

Know what you mean. Sometime in late Nov, early Dec 1965 I caught the fog just out of Santa Ana heading to Pendleton about 1 in the morning. Put the left headlight of my 36 on the outside yellow line of 101/5 and hung my head out the window so I could see all the way to the San Onofre exit. That was back when it was only 2 lanes on either side.
