What is the best way to identify my automatic transmission on the 289 in the Fairlane? With my limited eye sight and physically ability about the best I can do is to run her up on the ramps and snap some pics. Any ideas or suggestions?

shape of pan and number of bolts
one piece case or does it have bell housing type front piece??
and early 260/289=======5 or 6 bolts to block?????
thanks, Jerry, I'll get under her in a few days and take a look and then post my findings
hard to find a shop that will mess with it but I sure need it serviced and thought it would be nice if I knew what I had LOL
back in those days there were some that had a D1 and D2 detent--------but you can identify from pan shape and bolt pattern--you ll have to search or maybe if you post pic I can tell you what it is------
cool, I'll see what I can come up with
Try this page, you should be able to match up what you have.

And Mello, correct me if I've got it wrong. But my memory says that in 1962, that shouldn't be a 289 but a 260.. unless it's a swap...??..??
If the case is cast iron, it's a Cruise-o-matic. Also an FM, basically the same trans. And yeah, it should be a 260 or a 221.
Thanks for the link, Mike, and "yes" it has been swapped and not the stock 260. Now that I have all this info I need to get her up on the ramps and start comparing.

OK, it quit raining, gorgeous weather and she's up on the ramps. Took some pics and counted the pan bolts that seem to number 13. The pan appears to be square and it sure looks like a bell housing to me. Would Y'all take a look at these pics while I compare them to the ones on Mike's link and see what we can come up with? Sorry that the pics aren't more professional but I did good to get my old bod under there and even hold the camera still.:LOL::LOL:

OK, after looking at Mike's link, I'm coming up with a C-4. Now, could that also be a Cruise-O-Matic or are they two entirely different transmissions?
that looks to be what is called a C5 .. it has the dipstick tube screwed into the pan ..and the bellhousing would separate from the trans like a stick trans . that is the better of the small block trans .. usually comes in trucks and vans with a 351 engine ..
Thanks Hoss, I also rechecked th number of bolts and it appears there are 14 instead of 13.
After looking around for something with 14 bolts, I can only find the AOD that has them. Now, I'm confused again so I'd better go to a braille count on the bolts again.
OK, contorted under there again and counted 14 there is also a part of the contact surface of the pan that isn't exactly square.

One more comment and I'll s'hup. When I go looking for a rebuilt kit, the only ones that have 14 holes in the pan gasket are the Cruise-O-Matics so wouldn't that mean that mine is indeed a Cruise-O-Matic transmission?
Have a great weekend, Y'all,

well I may be wrong .. can you tell if it has a cast iron center section .. it may very well be a cast iron cruise O matic .. not the best trans ford made but functional I guess ..
