Chasing a annoying trans leak or so I thought

A couple years ago I got the trans hot in my 55 Sunliner and lost third gear,a fluid change got third back but the trans was not right but was able to drive it. Since I plan on putting a original engine back in with in a couple years I did not want to spend the money to get the C-4 rebuilt so I put a used trans in,it leaked from the rear seal really bad so I thought I damaged the seal when installing it so it got replaced and it done the same. Pulled the drive shaft again and noticed fluid all over the rear of the yoke and nothing on the front where it was close to the seal,it looks like when I had the drive shaft made I had it made a little too long and it bottomed out on the output shaft and pushed out the plug. After having it shortened 5/8 and new yoke no leaks,there was a bunch all over the frame and its dribbling some but not that long stream of fluid.

First drive shaft was too short so when I installed the rebuilt C-4 I had a longer one made,it took a couple years and then I started noticing small puddles of fluid on the garage floor but nothing serious. Removing the drive shaft some how disturbed it enough to leak much more.

had problem like that years ago ended up replacing yoke , it just wasn't smooth enough to get good seal. Hope you get it fixed, nobody like oil all over.

Just the fluid that ran all over the frame was dripping for a few days but no big puddle.

that's called undercoating! LOL

Since its a convertible and has that x in the frame it ran all over the place.

Thankfully it'll evaporate in time.

Next project is to install a radiator with a trans cooler and will order one monday,the original trans was air cooled so I stuck one on the radiator nd debris got caught between the two and got the trans hot while in Florida.

The used trans I installed never worked right so I had another rebuilt and now doing fine,it now has a radiator that has a cooler and extra cooler so its not going to get hot this time.

Jeff, you're probably well aware but just in case someone else reads this later the "cooler" in the radiator also serves as a heat sink in the winter, keeping the tranny fluid at operating temperature. If used, an external cooler should be in the line going TO the radiator, not in the return line from the radiator. In winter driving the extra cooler will pre-cool the fluid, then the internal cooler will get the fluid to the right temp for the tranny, either cooling it further or warming it a bit.

Glad you got your tranny performing right! Those '55 Fords are such a clean design, and a convertible? Super Cool! Pictures?
