I sprayed down my faux lake pipes and wheels on the 48 with WD40.the SS (Silver Streak) catches a lot of condensation.

I've known a few guys with bare metal builds to spray WD40 on there to keep the steel from rusting. Most of them went to boil linseed oil with a little mineral spirits as that lasts longer if the vehicle sets outside all the time.
I'd agree with Ryan, boiled linseed oil will set up for a longer lasting protective layer but can be removed with mineral spirits when needed. WD40 is mainly varsol and mineral oil meant to displace moisture. Neither is going to be permanent.
