I have a 1950 GMC 1 ton that still has the original front suspension and brakes that I would like to upgrade particularly the brakes. I want to retain the 1 ton rating and the 8 lug wheels but do not find any after market items that would work. What are the options? Will I need to replace the front clip and if so has anyone done one that was similar?
Welcome to CHR Red Jimmy, I hope that you enjoy it. I have been around light duty trucks alittle in my days but I am not sure of what is interchangable. I do know that there are ways to change front suspensions. You can do alot out of the wrecking yards, measure your springs for the size and width of the axle and go compare it to more modern trucks, say a Ford C600 or a Chevy C65. There is probly a way you could fit one to your truck with a little fabrication.
Another way to go might be to take the bodywork from your truck and put it on another 3/4 or 1 ton frame, which has all the updated steering and brakes that ypou are looking for, say a 80s Chevy or GMC.
You should be able to find one with a bad body real cheap.
