hard starting

have this 57 cj5 with 283 in it. Been sitting for 20 or so years when I got it. Drained gas, oil, new plugs/wires/points/carb overhaul/oil filter/fuel filter. Still when I go to start it the engine tries to catch, but just won't continue to run. I had a leak at the fuel inlet line so I cut off the fuel pump, it is electric. Will this matter? I mean the fuel bowl is full of gas before I tried to start it. any help will be apppreciated. Thanks..Paul

Well, I'd start with checking compression then maby startin fluid in the carb. Try regapping the points, may solve the problem.

Wow. Still has gas in it according to your post??? Maybe varnish in the fuel system is the problem?

Carb Kit, new fuel pump clean or replace the fuel lines, New fuel filter for sure. flush out the tank
