Lowering a 54 Chevy...Whats my options?? (once again)

Ok, so I had this thread up, but I guess it got deleted when the site when down :mad: but oh well, here it is again.

I want to lower the front of my 54 Chevy... atleast 4 inches, preferably 6. But the thing is, Im on a budget and I also want to keep the frame fairly stock.

So first I thought of just cutting the coils, but that will only give me a few inches at most.

Then I thought of a mustang 2.. but like I said, Im on a budget.

After that I had a crazy idea of removing the stock a-arms and cross member, and replacing it with a straight 6" drop axle, radius rods, panhard, ect... (speedway sells everything I needs for this)

I'd like everyones opinion on this, and what would be some other options to lower. And please take note: this car will just be a driver/cruiser with a 250 engine...so I wont need heavy duty/racing/polished stainless parts. Just something that will work.

Not super familiar with 54's but can't you just get dropped spindles... do that with new or modified coils.

yeah, I thought of that also, but they're kinda pricey.

I think my best bet is cutting the coils AND getting dropped uprights.

u could unbolt the front suspension & then notch the subframe so the frame sits deeper into it, or even cut the lowwer control arms & make pockets so the coil sits lowwer in them...joe

The best way is to use an air ride system. Certainly not cheap, but the best way to go. You could check out various vendors selling the parts needed. A lot of people use air springs made by Firestone which are a lot less expensive than the units sold by others (like AirRide). A little fabrication on your part may be necessary. With the money saved you could then invest in a front system from Air Ride specifically designed for the 54.

A friend has his 53 Chevy on an complete Air Ride system and works very well, looks terrific when he drops it in the weeds.

so far the best/cheapest idea i have is cut coils along with dropped uprights. should get atleast 4-5 inches, right?
