located a disc brake rear out of 91 cougar supposed to measure 52 inches flange to flange. Could be a good fit for my 32 chevy. Any insight to what this rear might be or if its usable. Still have to go check it out. Price will be ok it belongs to a good friend. thanks
could be an IRS????? Whether it's a solid axle or IRS depending on the equipment it could be either an 8" or an 8.8"..... Take your tape measure along, sounds kind of narrow?????
Think you are right about the IRS, Dave. Pretty sure my 91 T-Bird had that, and they used the same platform.
Dave is right, 52 is pretty narrow. Most rods of that era need something in the 56 inch width area. My S10 rear is 52, but it is in a T bucket and I have super deep rims to get the tread out there.

Update: it is a solid axle with discs. Its sort of a triangulated 4bar (two lower trailing arms, with the bosses cast on top on an angle) also has air bags mounted in front of the axle on the lower arms. tag off the cover reads S407F at the top and bottom 3L27N889H21. Hope someone can figure this out. Thanks Scott

Your local Ford parts guy will have the breakdown on the S407F number.
