Hi Everyone, Just wondering, I took my transmission down to the shop that originally built it to have them go through it. It sat for 8 or so years & was never used. For some of this time it sat outside in the weather and got wet. It's a turbo 400 reverse valve body with manual shift & a trans brake. They are charging me $850 to redo it & the torque converter. Is this a fair price??? Thanks everyone, Bill
Seems about right. Considering the bench time for a complete soft-part overhaul + parts & flushing the convertor.
Hey Thanks Don, Even though it's a reputable shop, in my head I was questioning the charges. Probably mostly due to the fact that I know nothing about transmission work. And, of course, if I'm paying it seems like to much & if I'm charging it doesn't seem like enough.... Also they were going to test the transmission on their dyno. Not sure how big of a deal that is..... And the transbrake needed a new solanoid..... Thanks again as it's REALLY great to be able to ask knowledgeable board folks questons before I complain about the charges ;) BillQuote:

A rebuild plus a dyno test for $850.00??? I'd say that is a good deal.... I had a C-6 overhauled, shift kit, and new torque converter a couple years back....the bill was $1,250.00!!! Must be why I still run 5 speeds, I know how to work on them!!!
You'd likely pay more like $1,200 most places.
Thanks Dave. Yeah a stick shift. I could 'miss shifts' just like I did in high school..... Although what I always did like about stick shifts was they seemed faster even when they weren't. Although this transmission is going to shift harder than anything I've ever owned. I just LOVE that shift into second 'churp' ;)Quote:

Missed shift??? Not me, I just run it up to the rev limiter and pull (or push) the handle!!! (Doug Nash trans with a Long V-gate!!)

.......may be it's harder to miss a shift now with modern shifters??? Last time I had a stick it was my '69 Nova with a M-22 Rockcrusher...... oh, except for a honda civic & a ford pinto..... Bill
Lots of improvements on shifters. The V-gate I use is a straight back and forth, no H pattern at all. Compared to the old factory shifters..... well, there is no comparison. The new ones are so much better.
Same with automatics, when I was a kid if you had a powerglide it must be your mom's car!! Now I think about 90% of the bracket racers run them!! Technology is great, huh???
The price seems fair. I just had my C6 gone through last year. Complete rebuild with extra clutches, stage-2 shift kit, manual/automatic valve body, and a new torque converter. It was all bench work, no vehicle removal. My final price was just a bit over $1000. The rebuilder also warranties his work with a 24,000 mile 2 yr warranty.
Yeah- it's about right for these parts anyway.
