It depends on how extensive of a kit and what is wrong with your transmission. Most kits don't come with bearings and such and none com with front pumps. I recently rebuilt my TH350. I used the Hughes kit that does come with bushings. I used a chisel to remove the old bushings and made some bushing drivers out of some cheap sockets I had laying around. The pistons that operate the clutches can, with the exception of one, be removed with c-clamps. The one on the rear of the case required a special tool. I made one using parts of a harmonic damper pulley, some bolts, a piece of a turnbuckle, and a big washer. You will have to assemble the transmission sever times because you have to select the correct thickness of thrust bearings to put in the transmission. All of this will make your transmission like new. It was very high up on the difficulty scale, especially cutting out bushings with a chisel. I didn't need to change any bearings except for the bearing between the front pump housing and torque converter. You may not need to change any at all. In that case, to freshen up a transmission with new clutches and no hard parts isn't particularly difficult. I also had to replace my front planetary set.
to be totally honest i dont know what it needs. i know i have no 2nd 3rd or OD
I had a thrust bearing failure on my front planetary set that caused of of the gears to wear through the carrier. No big deal, the other 3 gears in the planetary set took up the load. But, as the gear wore through it filled the tranny fluid with metal shavings that eventually plugged the filter. I lost all gears forward and reverse when this happened.

I don't know the 4 speeds well, but I would guess that you are either not getting fluid pressure to any of the pistons that operate the front planetary set or your the clutches for the front planetary are severely worn. Low and reverse are done by the rear planetary in the 3 speed which would explain why you have low and reverse but no other gears.

I lost 1st and OD...it was a shifting solenoid (fairly cheap)...it was a 4L60E, so it might not be the same. Just thought I'd throw it out there.
First, i would check the govenor, on the passenger side just in of the tail
housing pull it hold it gear up move the weights and you should be able to see the valve move in the slot in the middle. What does the fluid look like
color, smell, etc. How many miles, how long has it been for service.

If it wont shift out of first, that is easy. It's either a governor problem like stated above, but more likely your vacuum line from the intake manifold to the vacuum modulator is not hooked up, damaged, or kinked. Possibly, the vacuum modulator is bad, you could replace it to see what happens. It's one bolt and costs about $7.
umm the trans has 140000 miles on it. i had 1st and 2nd but then 2nd went on me too but before it when it shifted outta 1st it sounded like it was going into neutral (thats what D and OD did too) and now i got just 1st and reverse

Chances are the froward clutch plates are worn out along with the 3-4 clutch
plates, the govenor is what makes the trans shift govenor pressure overcomes
throttle pressure to shift the trans the detent cable at the throttle body controls the shift points.If you was to build this trans my suggestion would be
look up atsg (automatic trans service group) on the internet get a manual from them and read through it look at what tools you will need, as for a parts

well im planning on a performance rebuild so i can stuff it in my camaro. so besides the book i would need a performance rebuild kit?
Don't get that book for your tranny, it is for a turbo 350. You'll need one for a 700r4 which I can't find at the moment. I recommend you buy the book before buying your parts and read through it. There are a lot of special tools, some of them you may need to locate. For most you will be able to improvise. I was able to improvise all of them on my 350, but the 700r4 is a little more complex. To do a performance rebuild, just grab yourself a good set of clutches and steels. The Hughes kits get the job done. They don't come with any valve body modifications, but even without, my 1-2 full throttle shift is firm enough to chirp my 265 wide tires.

Check out this item on Ebay. You can't build a transmission for the money this guy gets. We have bought a C6 and Turbo 350 from him, and they were a steal. His Ebay rating is like 2100 with 100% positive!! This particular trans will handle 500 HP, but he has others for more. (click on sellers store)

the 1-2 shift if a 700r4 is controlled by the servo in the side of the case, which pushes the second gear band on. Also if you lost everything but first and it just won't shift out of first, you might have run it out of fluid. If the fluid comes out black and smells rather burnt then its possible that all you'll need is a new set of clutches and steels. When you pull the band out of the case, look at it but don't bend it. If it looks black like its burnt, replace it. If it has a lot of visible cracking, replace it. Make sure to look at all of your planetaries because that can be a problem too. The gears in the planetaries get eaten up and a blown up planetary is not a good sight. Then check the sunshell to make sure that it hasn't sheered the nose off of it. After that check the sungear's teeth for wear. Then make sure the sprag only turns 1 way. It should turn 1 way and lock in the other way. After that check the rear planetaries to for wear and things.
Your assembly from front to back in hard parts should go: pump, 2 drums (band around the first drum with the lock button under the valve body in place), front planetary assembly, sunshell, sun gear, sprag, rear planetary, rear piston. Be sure to take the rear piston out of you can because the lipseals on those have a tendency to ruin themselves. A 700r4 basically stacks exactly like a th350. There's just a few different things about them.
My advice if you want to do it yourself, which isn't that hard, would be to tear it down, bathe the entire thing in solvent (mineral spirits), and be sure to get a manual to tell you specifications, service calls (things that go wrong a lot which a manual that is up to date should tell you how to fix them), ect. Just be clean and pay attention to what you are doing.
