700r4 WHICH BRAND TO BUY? HELP!
Just ripped out my engine and trans last weekend. Ready to buy 700r4. Which one? TCI, ART CARR, BOWTIE OVERDRIVES, PHOENIX, ETC. I am concerned that what is supposed to be inside wont be there? Any help or past good or bad experience would be very helpful. Thank you, Phil..."I also have a tuner, the reception's not to good, but it works"

.....I use California Performance Transmissions @ 877-278-2277. The shop is owned by Art Carr. Art Carr sold what is now called Art Carr Transmissions in the mid to late '90's. So the Art Carr Transmission shop that is located in Texas is NOT owned by Art Carr. Anyway give 'em a call {their web site isn't all that informative}. I believe they do the transmissions for the show Overhaulin. Art Carr was originally recommeded to me by Kenny Duttieller {the tubo engine builder guy} back in the late 80's. He used to use there transmissions until they had to go to Lenco's do to so much HP. I would & do trust them. I'm using a Turbo 400 that they originally built for me in the 90's & they just re-built for me for my '32... BUT I myself would not use a 700R4 unless in was in a low HP application.... Bill

I'm facing the same dilema on one of my Camaro's. I've heard so many bad reports about the 700R4's I'm about to sell mine and get a 400 turbo.... Nobody seems to be to sure how well or long they will stand up to 400 horse or above engines......Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Dont buy a f**king Mad Dog tranny. I am now going to my 3rd one from them and have been swapping parts on the second one for 6 months trying to get it to work. They SUCK and you can take that to the bank.
The first one broke on the second second to third gear shift. Second one still won't go into 4th gear. After changing everything they could think of. I am extremly close to getting an attorney.Last edited by sleeperred90tgp; 12-01-2006 at 05:03 PM.

More confused than ever! First off, I cant even imagine paying anywhere under 1000.00, let alone 2000.00 to get anything hat will hold up. Maybe cause Im in NJ Im used to higher pricing, but 700.00 w/ a convertor? Wow!
Astroracer, great idea about local and I would prefer, but just dont know of anyone around here.
A few of you comented on a 700r4 not holding over 4-500hp. I have seen some rated to 800. Is this nonsense? I thought if the sun gear was re-done it was a little stronger, especially with the 30 spline. Cant keep my th350 cause highway is to high in the rpm depo?
Mikes trans would be good but I believe they are more powerglide oriented. Now I'm more confused than when I asked!"I also have a tuner, the reception's not to good, but it works"

PRRC, thanks for some comfort regarding Monster Motorsports. To answer the original question of this thread here is the site for MM:
http://www.eatmyshift.com/
The transmision is $1195 with FREE SHIPPING but you will still need a matching torque converter. I forget the actual total cost but it was about $1400 with the converter. The model I bought is the 2WD model above the lowest minion. I was able to specify a "soft shift", just my preference, rather than quick shifts. I chose Monster Motorsports because they have a hydraulic shift for the OD and I wanted to avoid an electrical connection. It is now installed in an incomplete '29 'glass roadster from Bebops (fendered) with a mild SBC350 and 8" Maverick rear with 3.55 gears. Sometimes I get a lot done on the car in a week but when the weather is cold I have to leave it go for a while. Maybe it will be on the road next summer?

I bought a 200R o.d. from T.C.I. for my street rod. I had Questions about cable adjustment, so at the Nats I visited their booth for info...They treated me like I was a fool. Very snotty! No help at all. The trans lasted about 250 miles and crapped out. Rather than have to deal with them, I took it to a local shop. They did an excellent job on it. They told me there were parts missing...It does work great now, but I'll stay clear or T.C.I !
You're welcome Mike, glad it worked out for you. Roger, it's taken a few years but my inventory of excess parts has shrunk a fair bit from 1 1/2 garage stalls to about an eight by eight space. ...
