Unhappy help i'm blowing a gasket

I've got a 70 chevelle 402 in my 57 chevy. It sat afew years and when i fired it up again it keeps blowing the oil filter gasket out. The 1st time it did it right a way. The 2nd time after a couple minutes The last time I was able to set the lifters and run it about 15 mins. I reved it a little and got a backfire and it blew the gasket again. Any thoughts would be great

I changed the by pass but put in a used one since thats all I could find. The spring seems to move easy enough.

You must have a plugged (or partially plugged) passage downstream of the oil filter.

are you just replacing the spring? the valve is what sticks open. is the valve free also?

be sure you dont have 2 oil filter gaskets in the motor. if it started when you changed the oil id double check that.

oil goes from the pump to the filter the to rest of engine my quess is there something wrong in the oil pump. what is oil pressure? is it high? I also like Denny's idea of double gasket. As for the bypass it rarly goes bad and besides it is for your oil filter if it should become clogged if this happens the valve opens and you engine will continue to oil what regulates the oil pressusere is the bypass spring in the oil pump.

Thanks guys I'll try your ideas and see what happens. As for the oil pressure the 1st time it blew it pegged the gauge and it ruined it so I don't know now. I hate to ruin any more but I guess I'll go buy a cheapo one this weekend. Worst comes to worst i'll sacrafice it to the oil pressure gods.

Just to let everyone know and for future ref. It was the oil pump. I took it out and the relief spring in the big blk oil pump is wrapped in plastic.Well that plastic got hard tore itself up and plugged the pick up screen. it now runs at a constant 60lbs and sounds bad a**.

I have had alot of problems with fram filters. They filter out such small particals that wouldn't effect your motor anyways that they clog and cause restriction. If you don't want to take my word for it try going to www.hotrodgossip.com and post the question of opinions on fram oil filters and watch the responses. May of us have had them actually "pop" with high volume pumps and as little as 1000 miles on the oil. My suggestion is to use a cheap one but not the cheapest you can find. I use a wix on all of my vehicles and just change your oil regularly.

"....be sure you dont have 2 oil filter gaskets in the motor. if it started when you changed the oil id double check that...."

"...... Like was mentioned. If you have 2 gaskets on there, or if it actually blows the filter round, the pressure relief (metal) plunger is sticking closed, not regulating pressure......"

I'd also look for either a double gaskget, or a defective mounting surface.

Pull the filter and make sure there's not a gaskget stuck to the block (you wont be the first one this has happened to).

THe filter gaskget sits in a recess in the filter and they are almost impossible to blow out.

If you had a Hi oil pressure problem, it would most likely ballon the filter rather than blowing the gaskget out.
