I also am building a couple of 348's and here is my take on this with a lot of research and talking to as many folks as I can about the 348.
The only problem with the water jackets and the heads is on the 1958 348, this is a stand alone year engine and heads with no provisions in the heads for spark plug cooling. After 58 chevy redesigned the water jackets and there is no problems as far as I can find out. However on the 1958 engine you must use the 791 heads, and those heads don't work on any other engine. There is some parts interchanging between the Chevys but not much.
A TPI will have to have a manifold built for the 348 as no other chevy V8 is interchangable. You say you are going to use a "TBI" injection so a 4 brl manifold may work there and there are plenty of those for the 348.
The distributer on the 348, sounds like you have that handles pretty well. There are about 6 Co's making adapters to use a SBC or BBC dist, and yes the 348 dist is also all by itself and shorter than the other's.
The crank in a 348 with some machine work will fit in a BBC and the 348 use's the SBC oil pump. In all of my research not once has anyone ever mentioned oiling problems with the 348/409 motors. Sense oiling problems "DO NOT" plague the BBC or the SBC I don't see why it would be a problem with the 348/409.
The rockers on the 348/409 or also a little different there ratio is 1.75, this is pretty close to some of the after market BBC at a ratio of 1.72. I am using Comp Cams Magnum roller tips for the BBC at 1.72 dont think this will be a problem. Cams now there is were everyone has an opinion. The stock 348 cam is in no way a performance cam no matter what the numbers stated are. In a stock rebuild the stock cam should work just fine but we live in the real world. Do Not expect 250 to 280 HP from this cam, thats simply not going to happen. Also cams can be a problem this is not always a stocking item I have found out, but right now Comp Cams does have some cam blanks and will make one if you decide to go that way.
Good luck with this rebuild and let us know how it comes out. Here also is a link to a great parts source for the 348/409 engines. They do have a set of Stainless valves for your 348 and the price is $150.00 for the set.
