Im thinkin you need to talk to someone else there...sorry, I didnt get a chance to call today. I ran 110 LSA's on all my cams, and the last two are on a 108......I have power brakes. I admit, at idle, like when Im pulling out of the garage, or out of a parking space, you have very little power assist., you really have to push hard on the pedal. I have grown used to it, so it doesnt bother me. On the hiway at speed, it's no problem. But it might bother you, I dont know. I'll try to remember to call tomorrow. I e mailed my ph # to you Johhny.
I talked to Crane today and to be honest they spent more time and asked more questions of me than anyone else so far.
They gave me a recomendation on a cam that is an off the shelf cam but suggested I have it ground/order with a different LSA.
The crane guy said with this cam would require about a 2800 rpm converter with about a 3.73 geared read. Thats about as high as I want to go but it sound good to me.
Please; all that have cam and engine building experience, your comments are appretiated. Here is the cam:
236/246 @ .050
553/571
110 LSA (off shelf uses 114, crane recomended 110)

I dont know where the email went, I checked twice and it's not there. That cam is good, Im sure Crane is a quality unit. And Im glad they helped you a lot. The one I suggested is not too different, this Crane one is a little bigger. 234/240 at .050, 304/314 advertised (what's the crane at advertised duration?) and .540/.540 lift, on a 110 LSA. The guy I talked with asked me your engine specs, and lots of questions, and he said the one I suggested was the one to go with...he also said a 110 LSA is better for what you want, more power, and quicker. Idle will be a little lumpier, but still very tunable. What are they charging you for a custom grind, and how long a wait? JOHNNY YOU THE MAN!
Anyone else building a big block listen up. I was having a hard time choosing a cam and heads. Johnny here called up the guys he deals with at Howards on his own time and gave them the specs for my build. Took the time to call me long distance on his own dime to give me the info.
On top of that turned me on to Canfield cylinder heads, which appears to be an awesome deal. Comparitively to edelbrocks heads at approx 1800 bucks, Brodix at 2000 and AFR at 2200; Canfield has an aluminum head with optional combustion chamber cc's assembled with all premium parts for 1400 bucks, and has flow numbers comparitive to all the others! To me thats a deal, and Johnny is a stand up guy for being so helpful. Thanks JOHN!

Thanks Scott for the props, glad I could help. I love doing this stuff. Now you know why I buy almost all my stuff from Comp. Products and Howard's cams. Good luck with your project.

Scott, shows 509 HP at 6K, and 516 torque at 4500. PM me with your fax number and I'll fax you three pages. JohnWhen your dreams turn to dust, Vacuum!

John I Pm'd my fax # to you.
'As I said in the PM I exepected #s to be a little higher. Way I figured this was the 1970 454 LS6 motor had 450 hp and close to 500 ft lbs in stock trim. That means moderate performance Q jet carb, cast iron no rise manifold, stock exhaust manifold, Cast iron heads and a moderate performance cam. It has been said that GM also kept the reported performance #s low to keep epa happy and that the motor actually performed beeter than reported.
Now my build is .030 over so a tiny more CID. My motor will run a Holley more performance oriented type carb with a higher rise perfomance dual plane manifold. The cam you helped me pick has larger overall #s. I will use headers over stick ex manifolds. Most importantly is the Canfield aluminum heads I will use over the cast iron GM heads.
Considering the pistons are the exact same I would have expected 75-100 more ft. lbs and hp than the stock LS6 motor. I was expecting #s somewhere around 550 on both HP and torque. Am I wrong for expecting this?

Hey Johnny thanks for the fax you sent. Please read the PM and or the post before this one, and gimmie opinion.
also I messed up. On the fax you copied what I recently wrote and cam specs were a little off. Cam should be as follows:
Howards custom grind: 234/240 540/540
110 LSA (on fax My mistake and you put in 234/250)
Dont mean to be a pain in the ass but when you time time try this crane cam just to see the difference 236/246 553/571 on 110 LSA
